| So, at long last, the writers of the RemixRedux09 stories have been revealed. As some of you guessed, I wrote the massive Reaping the Whirlwind (Boom Boom Ba Remix), which was a remix of Six Drabbles About Dawn and Death by nothorse. Just for the record: I am never, ever doing that to myself again.I'm filing this one under, "What the hell was I thinking?" Actually, I do kind of know what I was thinking, and I deserved to be kicked in the head for it. Repeatedly. Before I explain my insanity for this year, I want to take time out to thank everyone who read what was basically a novel and actually gave feedback on it. I figured that I'd get zero feedback during the anonymous period because asking anyone to read 230-page fic in one sitting is really a little bit beyond the pale. And yet, people did exactly that. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you all gave it a go. Special love to brunettepet who not only read every part, but gave detailed feedback on every part (you don't know how much you made my day), to secondalto for listing it in the su_herald that first day, and to original writer nothorse for leaving positive feedback and reccing the story on her personal LJ. ( What worked, what didn't, and why next year I'm taking Valium before I type word one for the Remix... )Now that I've finished with my TL;DR meta, I figure I better point you to the fic. In this journal I'm going to post one part a day for the next 14 days, mostly because I still think asking people to read 230 pages in one go is asking just a little bit too much. For people that want to read ahead, they can get the whole story on the Remix community. No, your eyes don't deceive. It grew from 3 to 4 parts. Due to LJ posting limits, I couldn't fit the very final section of this story. Still, you won't mind waiting until tomorrow to read the very, very end, right? (*puppy eyes*)

| So, at long last the writers of the remixredux08 are revealed. My submission this year was Walking Higher (The Childhood's End Remix), which was a remix of Winter Garden by kivrin. Before sending you off to read the story, I'd like to get in a little blather about how this particular remix came together, in large part because of how fundamentally different my process was this year versus previous years. For a start, the choice of story to remix, not to mention the form my remix would take, came very easily to me. However, there were a bunch of smaller pieces that were actually a lot harder. The hardest thing of all for me this year? Coming up with a title for the story, which was changed mere hours before the archive went live. Before we go under the cut, I would like to start my little bit of meta on this year's remix by blaming Homicide: Life on the Street as the inspiration for my remix story. And in particular, I'd like to blame the Season 4 episode, The Damage Done. Cut for those who don't care. ( Meta: What was I thinking? The trials and tribulations of a remixer. )Sorry for the tl;dr discussion, but I'm really excited about this remix and, I feel I should add, that I couldn't have asked for better source material for my remix. I do urge you to go read Winter Garden by kivrin, a short, dream-like story of excellent quality about Giles and Xander finding each other in Washington DC 14 months after the events of "Chosen." If you're curious, you can hear Heather Nova's "Walking Higher" in its entirety on LastFM. You can also hear "Walk This World" in its entirety on Last FM. Now, on to the story... | Once more the wave of kerfluffle hits Buffy-verse fanfic. I swear to God, it's become the annual right of spring. The same suspects are even involved. And it's caused the same thing: the fundamental disconnect between people who hold two distinct theories of fanfiction. There are issues over proper writing mechanics, themes, characterizations, subject matter, inaccurate and inappropriate appropriation of various cultures, and all of that. But every one of those issues still comes down to the same thing: the Disconnect (here now rendered with a capital "D") between two distinct theories of fanfiction. On the one hand, you have people who look at fanfiction as a way to constantly challenge themselves and improve their writing. On the other, you have people who look a fanfiction as a fun hobby and are less worried about the mechanics of it. I suspect a few people will unfriend me over what follows beneath the cut. Fair enough. It's your right. But this is my LJ. I pay for this space. I'll bitch if I want to. ( About your story and the fall-out... )Well, that was a lot of .02. Sorry to take up people's time with a tl;dr post. |

| Just so you know? I'm doing this on a dare. See, I was talking to a friend I met through fandom waaaaaaaay back in the day when there was no WWW and we only had Usenet to keep the fanwank flying and we got on the subject of shippers and shipping and our general frustration that sometimes that kind of thing gets in the way. Then, just as we were about to break our own arms patting our own backs, we realized that, unh, we're not exactly innocent here. So we got to talking about OTPs, or rather, our OTPs. Then she dared me to come clean. In public. In front of all my present-day fandom buddies. There may have been some bribery of chocolate involved. I'm not sure. By the time we reached the triple-dog-dare level, I knew I was beat. So here, with pictures, are my Top 5 OTPs (Ever!) from television. No snickering, please. ( Top 5 OTPs from Television (With Pictures) )So, talk dirty to me people. Your Top 5 OTPs. Any television show. Any genre. Can be canon or completely fanon. I promise not to laugh. It's not like I've got any room to do that, right? |

| Yes, indeed. I just outed myself over on TwOP as someone who actually likes Kennedy. Truthfully, by the end of S7, I liked her more than Willow. Granted, introducing Kennedy in S7 sucked because she, like Andrew, stole time away from the characters I really cared about (Buffy, Giles, Xander, and Willow). Despite that, I still like the character. Unlike Andrew. Whom I hate with the passion of a thousand fire-y nuns seriously dislike, mostly because ME kept shoving him down my throat and playing DEMAND LOVE when it came to Andrew. First I'm a Xander fan. Now I'm a self-proclaimed Kennedy-liker. Is it any wonder my corner of Buffy fandom is cold and lonely? I fully expect to be ripped apart by Kittens over on TwOP. Maybe I can distract them with catnip... |

| God knows everyone on my FList linked to this piece of Guh! (Spoilery for the BtVS comics since it's the Issue 2 cover.) What d'ya know. It went from Web page to desktop wallpaper in .02 seconds flat. What? Stop looking at me like that. Still calling it comics!canon. And I'll wait on other people's thoughts on the series before I plunge into buying anything. But, I appear to be ridiculously easy to please. The cover honestly makes me squee. I am obviously full of squee today. Edit: Squeeee! Lookit what ponders_life gave me! |
|
| Don't ever change your wanky little heart. And bashing on the TWoP Buffy boards for failing to recognize the comics as cannon and that JW is the be-all and end-all of genius really isn't helping your case. Try this on for logic: Most Buffy fans have moved on. Only a very small subset of those who are still around will ever read the comics. If there's ever a filmed follow-up to the Buffyverse and if there's a RL reason to go directly against the comic-canon, you can bet every single comic will be efficiently handwaved by "the master" because most people not only wouldn't care, they wouldn't know comic-canon in the first place. Don't say you weren't warned. And the spoiler-y bit JW posted about Andrew and the overwhelming defense of that choice? Really, is it possible to make me want to read the S8 comics any less than I already do? Hat-tip to omnieWarning: Comments may be spoilery for the comic books, if you're trying to stay spoiler-free. |

| marenfic has an interesting discussion here about the slowdown in Buffy fandom. I won't spoil the discussion, but it's definitely worth the read. She brings up some excellent points, and I agree with a lot of what she says. Heaven knows I saw something of the same thing for my Dark Xander Fic-A-Thon. A lot of people honestly couldn't think of an angle, others couldn't think of an angle that hadn't been explored before. Lord knows, I complained to my brother that the direction I finally settled on (VampXander) after several false starts had been pretty much done in almost every way possible. The only way to make it new was to mix up the clichés and impose a semi-complicated plot on it. A whole lot of people were in my boat, and I'm very sure that everyone who contributed beat their heads against the wall to come up with something off-the-norm. I've certainly seen a lot of fandom drift on my Flist, and it's all normal and good, because nothing lasts forever. Certainly I've been thinking along the same lines myself, although truthfully I haven't felt the need to jump fandoms. My pull is more towards getting off my butt and pulling together some original fiction. The problem there is if I do it, I wouldn't want to jeopardize a hope of publishing it, so there'd be no way to throw it open for FB and concrit the way fanfiction can be. But the day's coming soon-ish where I need to make some hard decisions on that front, and I know it. As for why I haven't jumped fandoms, part of it, I think, is that I suffer from "Netflix" disease. As a friend of mine pointed out, a large part of Netflix disease is a direct result of network behavior. For example:
- Shows that I tend to like get yanked before all the episodes that have already been filmed are allowed to air. I've lost count in the last two years how many shows I've started watching, only to have that show disappear never to be seen again.
- The insane burden of commercials. I timed it once. For every hour of television, you've got roughly 22 minutes of commercials interrupting the flow. I go absolutely insane with commercials now because there are so many of them. I can't count the number of times I started channel flipping and ended up watching something else entirely because Animal Planet or Discovery or the History Channel sucked me in.
- Most television series are now "serials" instead of a series of stand-alone episodes. That's good, on the one hand, because now there's actual character growth and changing situations (at least in theory). That's bad, because if the network pre-empts for a week or two, it ruins the narrative.
End result? I'm now watching most of my television via Netflix. I mean, what the hell, right? The DVDs literally come out within weeks after the end of the season. It may put me months (or years) behind everyone else, but I get to watch television at my convenience, without commercials, and without interruptions. It's more than worth the trade. And that, in a nutshell, is Netflix disease. I know an awful lot of people who are suffering from it so much, that they've dropped cable down to the cheapest level so they can get the local stations and are now watching series purely through the magic of Netflix and DVDs. That said, I'm still addicted to watching the three-hour block on the Sci-Fi Channel in real time (the re-showing of Heroes, followed by Dr. Who and Battlestar Galactica). I'm also still watching The Amazing Race in real time because they've released precious few seasons on DVD. However, none of what I'm watching has really inspired me to write fanfic (although I've jokingly said I so want to see a wacky!hijinks story where Xander and Faith have to run The Amazing Race because one of the teams aiming for the million is a pair of demons who need to pay off debts — and they're willing to eat the other contestants to win), and I honestly don't see that particular jump happening to me in the future. The again, 10 years ago I was writing original Battlestar Galactica and Forever Knight fanfic. When I stopped writing it, I thought sure that I'd never do fanfic again. It took years for me to change my mind, so never say never, I guess. In either case, I'm not at the moment planning on jumping ship, so to speak. But I can totally see (and understand) the fandom drift that's happening. I'm following some of it, albeit peripherally, because I enjoy the same shows. Other shows (like Lost, Veronica Mars, and Supernatural) haven't really thrilled me enough to get beyond a *meh.* |

| There I am, watching 'The Brooklyn Dodgers,' which is on Disc 5 of The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. and what do my wondering eyes see?
Mercedes McNab playing a runaway.
To be honest, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. She looked about 12, but it sounded like her voice.
I was close. She was 14-years-old.
And credited as Mercedes Alicia McNab.
First Christian Clemenson as a cool Buffy connection, now Mercedes McNab as a cool connection between Buffy and Angel.
Seriously, I'm laughing.
Hey, John Bly claimed he was from more than 600 years in the future, and Lord knows what that orb does.
No, I'm serious. The crossover writes itself.
Or rather, for one of you guys. I'll be over here. Finishing my own stuff. |
