14th-May-2007 11:59 am - State of Moi...and a call for Brit- and Spike-pickers
liz_marcs: Comics Xander with Liz Marcs name across the bottom. (Xander_Comics_Personalized)
I apologize for not commenting back to people commenting here lately, but between "season of broke" activities, RL, and a fic-a-thon commitment I totally spaced on, I've been slightly overwhelmed.

[The "season of broke," as I not-so-fondly call it, tends to run from mid-April to mid-June, and again from mid-November to mid-January. The season of broke tends to be the areas where all major holidays, family celebrations, and unexpected expenses tend to crop up.]

For those of you wondering, yes, I will finish posting the following stories very soon:

The goal is to get these finished over the next month (and I do apologize for the delay). Part of it is that when I post a part, it takes me roughly 2 hours to do so, mostly because of formatting and final read-throughs pre- and post-posting of a part. Also, for whatever reason, "cutting and pasting" from any kind of word processing program into Firefox means that the blasted formatting won't hold.

Let's not even get into the mess IE makes of anything I cut and paste into that interface. I think the phrase, "It el suck-os the big weiner-o" is not out of line here.

In the meantime, I've got two other things to get out:

  • The annual [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational fic-a-thon
  • A soopah-sekrit project which I can't say anything about right now (this one is on-going and won't be out soon)

My [livejournal.com profile] lynnevitational entry should be...ummmm...different. For me. It's something I've been kicking around for two years, but I've been hella nervous about throwing it out there. I suspect that someone, somewhere is going to be hella insulted by it and the premise, so I expect there might be some wank if I put it out.

That means I'll be needing eyes. I most especially need Brit- and Spike-pickers. I desperately need you.

I also need someone who's willing to read a story that is told from the point of view of someone who is, ummm, a little slow. Mentally. See, that's the potentially wank-tastic part. I need someone who's got a good sense of where the line is between good writing, bad writing, clichéd writing, and insulting writing. Looking at it from my (admittedly) limited PoV, it reads okay to me. It might not be okay for someone who lives with the issue every day.

If there are any volunteers (remember, I especially need Brit- and Spike-pickers), just reply here with a way for me to get in touch with you.

All responses to this post are being screened to maintain privacy. I will get back to everyone who responds.

22nd-Apr-2007 09:12 pm - My Remix Story
liz_marcs: Comics Xander with Liz Marcs name across the bottom. (Xander_Comics_Personalized)
Unh, well, when I say "my" remix story, I don't mean the one I wrote. I'm not going to make anyone guess, either, because...well there's a good reason for it and I can't tell you why because that might give away which one is mine.

Any-hoo.

My remixer did a fabulous job with my original, which was a misguided attempt at trying my hand at minimalism. He/she hung muscle and flesh on them thar bones and came up with a very sweet little B/X story. It appears that I lucked out again this year.

The only thing that confused me was the link went to the original, half-destroyed version on Fanfiction.Net (Thanks to all those Pit of Voles updates, a lot of the formating got stripped away.) That's when I realized that I never unhid the version I transfered to LJ and I never linked to the shiny formatted version in my "all my fics" post.

I am a dumbkoff! Deeeeeeerrrrr, Liz! Way to go!

Anyway, here's my original (shiny new LJ version!) Two Words, in which Buffy has an early morning conversation with Xander, but you only see her half of the conversation. Xander not only doesn't speak, you don't see him at all! Wheeee! An experiment in writing!

And here's Wake Up Slow (Second Time Around Remix), wherein it's an actual, full story! Now complete with a Xander! And Xander's half of the conversation! And Xander thoughts, even!

Yay!

Once more, a remix that's bigger and better than the original, folks. Go give the remixer some big love for working with a really minimalist piece of fluff and giving it some sweet legs.

*pets my liquid Kava Kava*

Worked late tonight, due to a tight deadline. That and the fact that I tend to lose all track of time when I'm writing, and boy was I writing today. Of course, I stupidly over-caffeinated  myself, which meant I had to do some self-medication to counteract the effects so I can actually fall asleep tonight.

Ummm, the liquid Kava Kava it works a lot better than I thought it would.

*stares at pretty colors for a little bit*

Wha?

Oh, yeah.

This is a late b-day pressie for [personal profile] nwhepcat to make up for the fact that there was no way in hell I was going to finish Water Hold Me Down in time for her b-day; my entry into the [profile] slayerversathon for [personal profile] mara_sho; and my very belated annual Christmas story.

I won't be posting on weekends, just FYI, especially this one. I've got a busy one lined up.

Title: Behold, Little Padawan!  (aka Five Adventures Xander Harris Never Had Wrapped in One True Christmas Story)
Author: Lizbeth Marcs ([personal profile] liz_marcs)
Rating: PG (Language)

Genre: Five Things, future fic, adventure, mystery, monster hunt
Characters: Xander, Faith, Andrew, OCs
Pairing: None (typical, hunh?)
Warnings: Links to Snopes.com, the Urban Legends Reference Pages may lead to disturbing stories and/or images. Please click with caution.

Summary: As Andrew tells five positively true (he swears!) stories about Xander Harris to a gaggle of Chicago Slayers, a stressed-out, exhausted Xander blows into town to help with a demon hunt. Toss in Faith who’s hopped on the bandwagon for reasons of her own, and it’s another classic Harris Christmas Special.

The magi, as you know, were wise men — wonderfully wise men — who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house.  But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest….

14th-Jan-2007 04:20 pm - Dark Xander: Nobody Never Gets to Heaven; Part 4/?
liz_marcs: Xander in a white shirt with a bloody nose and lip with the words "lost, confused, and broken" (Xander_Lost_Broken)
Today was MarcsMom's Unbirthday (yesterday being her Birthday), so I ended up hanging around the ol' homestead for a bit. By the time I scraped the thin ice off my car, dodged people driving either at 90 mph or 15 mph on the highways, and made it home, I was mentally exhausted and not up for another round of playing dodge-'em with people who've forgotten how to drive when it's cold and raining.

This is a unique New England thing, I think. People tend to "forget" how to drive in snow and ice in between winters. While the roads aren't icey (yet), people were driving in crazy ways. Thanks to the unseasonably warm winter weather, I don't think anyone has their winter "driving legs," hence the chaos I encountered at several points on- and off- the highways.

So, there went my plans for the day. (Note to self: Email apologies.)

I come home to comments on the part of this story I posted Friday night. Some people want to see Kennedy.

liz_marcs: Xander and Willow standing side-by-side with determined looks on their faces with the word "always" (Xander_Willow Always)
Holy cow!

I didn't realize that I never transfered this particular fic to LJ. This is another one that was put up on the Pit of Voles a few months before Buffy went off the air.

A Little Intro for Into the Desert )

For some reason, don't ask me why, but the original title for this story was The Intramural Street Hockey League and Goomba Society.

Don't ask me. I have no clue what it means, either.

I'm sure it made sense at the time.

Because of the story's thorough Jossing, at some point I changed the description from "spec" to AU, complete with a one-sentence description on why the world of Into the Desert was different from canon.

Title: Into the Desert
Author: Lizbeth Marcs [livejournal.com profile] liz_marcs
Rating: PG-13 for language, some sexual situations.

Pairings: B/OC; W/X. References to B/A, B/S, X/An, W/T. Hints of B/W/X.
Genre: Future fic, mystery, ghost story, character angst
Warnings: Character death(s). Spoilers for S7, up to “Dirty Girls.” Beyond that, it’s AU for the end of BtVS.

Summary: Buffy begins the task of starting her life over and rebuilding the Watchers Council without her two best friends at her side. (AU)
AU Element: What if Angel only brought himself and not the amulet to the final battle against the First Evil in “Chosen?”

Disclaimer: Xander Harris, Spike, Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Rupert Giles, and all associated characters and organizations are the property of FOX and Mutant Enemy. Any mention of real life events and real people are done to serve the story and are not meant to imply that the incidents in question have any relationship to reality. Into the Desert, Part 1 )
19th-Oct-2006 10:24 am - *insert evil laugh here* Three Queens *insert evil laugh here*
liz_marcs: (Xander_Faith_Partners_in_Crime)
It's now official. [livejournal.com profile] mara_sho has invited me on board to be one of the mods for I Need a Parrot, the XanderZone for the BtVS Writers' Guild.

I'll be joining [livejournal.com profile] othercat in wielding dictatorial god-like mod power to approve or reject stories for inclusion in the archive.

Of course our standards aren't, like, a mile high. It's more like, "Does it at least try to adhere to English standards? Does it even look the littlest bit like Xander? Is there a blessed lack of character-bashing? COOOL! Come on down!"

All genres and pairings and even stories that totally lack pairings are welcome. (Imagine that! An archive site that actually has a separate category for gen! YAYE!)

Actually, in looking at the numbers, I'm chargrined that there aren't more people uploading stories to the archive.

Yes, I am guilty of this. To rectify it, I've started uploading my shorter stories there (for now) and I'm in the middle of fixing the formatting mess that is Whisper. I'll be working to get more of my stuff over there in the next few months.

In truth, the new version of eFiction is actually a lot easier to use than the older version, so uploading stories through the interface is nowhere near the pain it used to be. And now that there are mods in charge *cracks knuckles* the issue of hackers breaking into the site and uploading malevolent software should be a thing of the past.

So, for all the peopple who've written Xander out there or have a few Xander stories they want to throw on an archive site for easy searching, don't forget to keep I Need a Parrot on your list.

If you just want to keep up with the latest stories to be posted to the site (the traffic is not terrifically heavy...at this rate it's maybe a couple of stories a day), you can sign up for the site's syndicated feed here on LJ at [livejournal.com profile] ineedaparrot.

ETA: Note that the [livejournal.com profile] ineedaparrot syndicated feed picks up new stories that have been uploaded to the I Need a Parrot story archive and provides a link to those stories.

It does not capture anything that's been posted to the LJ community [livejournal.com profile] i_need_a_parrot, which is also a Xander-centric fanfiction group, but is strictly an LJ thing.

The two are related in that they're both owned by [livejournal.com profile] mara_sho, and they're both focused on Xander as a character. However, they both serve very different functions. What appears on one is not going to appear on the other.

I hope that makes things more clear.
18th-Oct-2006 02:32 pm - Fic: Two Words (BtVS; post-Chosen; AU; G), Part 1/1
liz_marcs: (Buffy_Living_History)

This is one of my "rescued stories" from the Pit of Voles.

It was written in January 2003 long before I joined El-Jay and is definitely one of my earliest Buffy fics. You can tell because I don't have Buffy's voice quite right in this one. This was actually prompted by a "desperately need Buffy-verse fluff" challenge. Since the challenge came from a B/X shipper list, well...guess the parameters.

I wrote this as a one-sided conversation where you only hear Buffy's half. You have to imagine Xander's responses. At the time I liked it, if only because I had fun trying my hand at something different. Since it was released into the wild, it's been so thoroughly Jossed that it's insane.

One thing people might notice is that Anya is the only death mentioned. That's because Anya was fingered in spoilers as the "big Scooby death" very early on in S7. In fact, she was the first death to be spoiled. Spike's (temporary) death, if a recall, wasn't spoiled until much later in the season, and when it was it was long after this story was written. Also another thing that was spoiled fairly early on was Buffy sharing the power with the Potentials, although the how and why was still pretty unclear. As a result, the fact that there are more than two Slayers is mentioned in a round-about way.

Despite the thorough Jossing, I still hold on to it in my archives because it's a very, very different story than the kind I tend to write.

Title:
Two Words
Author: Lizbeth Marcs ([info]liz_marcs)

Rating: G
Genre: Heavily AU; future fic
Characters: Buffy, Xander
Pairing: Hints at future B/X
Warnings: Heavy AU (story was originally written mid-S7)

Summary: Buffy's one-sided chat with Xander early one morning.

AU Elements: Angel never brought the mystical amulet to Sunnydale. That means Spike survived the battle against the First Evil, and Sunnydale didn’t become a hole in the ground.

Disclaimer: Buffy Summers and Xander Harris and all associated characters and organizations are the property of FOX and Mutant Enemy. Any mention of real life events and real people is not meant to imply that the people or incidents in question as they are used in the story have any relationship to reality. Alexandrienne turned around to face me as Mr. Harris grinned and gave me a friendly wave.

I blinked in surprise at the gesture, as Mr. Harris and Alexandrienne turned back around. As his arm settled once more around her shoulders, it occurred to me that perhaps I did have something to offer after all. Mr. Harris may be able enough in his own way, but it was equally clear that he had a lot to learn about being a Watcher that would pass muster with the Council.

The only question I needed to settle to my satisfaction was whether such an offer would be tempting enough for Mr. Harris to accept.

Then I had to decide if I had the stomach to put that offer on the table.

“Ordered, pleaded, begged, bribed, you name it and he tried it. He all but danced a jig and sang show tunes to get them to talk,” Dave said. “No dice. Lips were zipped and the three eyeballs that existed between Willow and Harris just got hairier the more Mr. Giles tried to get around the subject about getting treatment for Liwaza. It was one hell of a tug-of-war.”

“That Mr. Harris and Miss Rosenberg won?” Yes, I know dear reader. I was being rather thick about the strange interpersonal dynamics that exist even to this day between Mr. Harris, Mr. Giles, and Miss Rosenberg. I simply couldn’t quite wrap my mind around the notion that two Watchers acted like petulant children and publicly treated the First Watcher as if he were a foolish relative that they held in low regard.

“They got what they wanted,” Dave answered softly. “I wouldn’t say they actually
won.”
