Hooray! Where you can find me besides LJ

I am now liz_marcs on JournalFen, thanks to System offering to rename people en masse if you leave a comment at the link. I suspect this offer is the result of a lot of people signing up with JournalFen due to LJ/6A going weird on us.

Yayness! Now I can crosspost without Semagic freezing up on me.

Aside from LJ (where I'm pre-paid until July 2008), you can find me at:

  • liz_marcs at InsaneJournal. I'm planning to be more a lot active here than I have been in the past and I do plan to slowly make this my main journal.

  • liz_marcs at GreatestJournal. This journal is mostly back-up for LJ and IJ in case both go down for whatever reason. I'm not planning to be too terribly active here.

  • liz_marcs at JournalFen. This journal is primarily going to be to back up my fanfiction and other fanish posts. Not so much the rest of it.

Hurrah! *wipes brow*

Liz - I'm not sure whether you will have seen this post by [livejournal.com profile] mefnord

You might be interested to know that "the kerfuffle has made it to the German news. There's an article in one of the biggest weeklys (the online version) about Harry Potter and the smut and they included the ponderosa pictures. No kidding. They are tiny, but if you have got any fantasy at all, you'll know what Snape is doing."

[livejournal.com profile] mefnord will happily translate for anyone who is interested.

Yeah, I saw that earlier. *shakes head*

The thing is, I'm not sure I want it translated. I'm starting to cross over into annoyed about the whole thing because I'm sick and tired of the overwhelming meme that seems to be going around among people outside of fandom (and more than a few inside of fandom) that fanfiction = porn.

I've just kind of had it on that front. It's gotten to be a little headdesky for me, so I figure it's best if I back away from that aspect of it.

How does one get a free account at JournalFen ?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure. There's a community somewhere where you can ask paid members to give you a code, but I'm not sure what it is or where to get it.

I got my account during the last time they opened the servers to people to people signing up for a free accounts, but that was something like two years ago (which was the last time JF did that).

JF community found

[livejournal.com profile] fishanwitt says the name of the community you need over on JF is 'Leavin' eljay'.

Go there and ask for an invite code.

I've just started an insanejournal account - surprisingly, I'm ffutures there too - and have friended you. I think that between LJ, GJ, and IJ my blogging future will probably continue somehow...

Don't know journalfen, is it especially useful for fanfic people?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The issue with JF is that it doesn't allow under-18. And just about every single proposal I've seen for a fannish-only site has ended up coming around to that same stance (which, really not surprising if you're going to allow explicit porn).

People also have issues with JF because it runs off a really old version of LJ and is somewhat limited in its way. Also, it hosts Fandom_Wank, which quite a few people hate with the fire of a thousand fire-y nuns armed with rulers and a big ol' frown.

I'd say it's a useful journal-style storage space for fanfic and fannish activities, and the owners are committed to protecting fannish interests, so you're less likely to be ToS'd over there. It's far less useful for non-fannish activities, I think.

The problem is, you need an invite code for a free account these days. I got my free account the last time the opened the servers for their 24 hours "mad period" that they hold occasionally (it was 2 years ago). There is a community over there where you can request invite codes from paying journal holders (because I'm free, I don't have an invite code to give) — but I don't know the name of the community or how to find it.

I'm having trouble adding JournalFen on Semagic. Did you have any problems?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
The thing I always forget is that it's a .net and not a .com.

It's the thing that seriously tripped me up when I threw my fanfic archive over there via LJ-SEC.

If you hand type in journalfen.net, it'll post. (I just did a test post to be sure.)

Thank you so much for helping me :)

Is InsaneJournal or GreatestJournal any better? Will the migration of fandom doom those poor sites as well? I'm just curious since MySpace seems to have the highest concentration of sickos and yet 6A seems to think it's them...

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
IJ, I think, is definitely the better of the two. It's a quirky place, the accounts are affordable, and it's interesting to see the fannish community literally building the place from the ground up. The LJ version over on IJ is only one version behind what we have here on LJ now (no embedded media yet).

I've had no problems customizing my entire layout over on IJ so that it matches my LJ exactly, either. Overall, I'm very pleased with IJ and my experience there. Also, Squeaky, who runs the joint, if very involved and has clearly stated that short of a court order or a DMCA takedown notice, he's staying hands-off on the content. Even in cases where legalities get involved, he won't delete the whole account, just request that you remove the offending post in question. So the ground rules are very clear there.

GreatestJournal runs on a much older code, which makes it far less attractive an option than it was when I first got the account two years ago. I don't see much by way of updating the code, and the options for customization are limited. Also, it's not entirely clear who/what runs the place and trying to get a response from any of the volunteers is questionable. That said, there's a smaller portion of people making a go of it there.
