Best Plagiarism Case Evar!

Not writing, but classical music.

Awesome!

This one has it all: The recordings of a little-known but critical darling classical pianist were actually recordings of even lesser known classical pianists. Although it's unclear whether the late Joyce Hatto was in on it, her husband finally confessed yesterday that he did steal other people's performances and put them under his wife's name. To cover his tracks, he'd either speed up or slow down the recording during the transfer process.

He was finally busted by, of all things, by the meta data displayed on iTunes.

Neil Gaiman has more details here. (Funny how writers seem to be very interested in this case.) Here's the detailed article he links to. Here's the husband's confession.

Classics Today has the whole story, too. (Scroll down to "Editorials" to get the scoop.)

All articles have links to other Web sites where dedicated audiophiles and classical music fen are building the evidence against the late Mrs. Hatto and tracking down the original artists. Here's the main page detailing the investigation at Pristine Classical.

Nice, it's nice to see that some people get caught.

The whole thing is fascinating, IMHO. :-)

It's just fantastic!

To me there was very little glee attached to this one, because the whole process of Hatto leaving off performing because of her health and then being too ill to play well....yeah.

I guess the best outcome would be if a few other musicians' careers got a boost as a result. Trying to make a living as a classical musician is a tough row to hoe.

Somehow the fact that it has al been uncovered pleases me greatly - if it hadn't been there would have been no story and long list of 'I did it for the best possible reasons' excuses. I expect him to produce a stalker in the next day or two, as he has already done the 'in poor health myself' bit, granted without asking for My Little Ponies, but there is time yet....

Hee. Glad I'm not dealing withit.

I just heard about this on NPR. It is wild.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-28 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
It always shocks me when I come across it in fanfic because there doesn't seem to be any connection that in a non-fanfic scenario there's some serious, serious consequences for plagiarism.

But this? Wild is exactly the right word. And it was only discovered because of metadata in the tracks (at least from what I understand). Lord knows, I've joked weird metadata on the promo CDs I have when I stick them in iTunes. I'm just shocked that for all the word this man did in covering his tracks, that he utterly failed to clean up the metadata attached to the tracks that could give him away.

It's a fascinating case overall.

I don't know anything about metadata, but I'll trust it's a rather boneheaded move for someone who knows how to do mixing and recording.

As for her involvement, I haven't read the links you provided, but I'd imagine that in her poor health she was willing to believe him (and may not have had the energy to question him critically) when he told her he was able to edit out the extraneous noise, etc.

I heard about this about a week ago from listening to BBC Radio 4, though at that time the guy hadn't owned up. Interesting case...
