It always shocks me when I come across it in fanfic because there doesn't seem to be any connection that in a non-fanfic scenario there's some serious, serious consequences for plagiarism.
But this? Wild is exactly the right word. And it was only discovered because of metadata in the tracks (at least from what I understand). Lord knows, I've joked weird metadata on the promo CDs I have when I stick them in iTunes. I'm just shocked that for all the word this man did in covering his tracks, that he utterly failed to clean up the metadata attached to the tracks that could give him away.
