RL crap; feeling like teh crap; and El-Jay kicks its user base again...

Things have been a bit...fubared with my RL.

Again, nothing bad, just a series of minor unfortunate events.

The previous two nights had me running around to get regular crap done and unable to hit the computer for any reason at all. Then I started feeling like a serious case of under the weather last night. I'm being propped up at work thanks to Tylenol and water right now. Me feels teh Crap.

And I totally spaced on Harry Potter coming out until Amazon pinged me the other day with an email that it's coming this weekend. I'm not going to be diving right into the book. I'm waiting until after I'm done re-reading the first six books (I'm only up to Goblet of Fire right now). I've waited almost 10 years for this series to end, so I'm going to end it in my own way, damn it!

Oh, and by the way, I don't care about spoilers (I'm already spoiled for quite a bit), so I'm not doing anything special at all vis a vis the Internet. But I'd appreciate it if people refrained from spoiling people in comments on this LJ, especially since I don't have the energy to hide-freeze-delete any spoilers (because...y'know, feeling like teh crap).

Since I figure the Internet is going to be a ghost town due to Potter-mania until at least Sunday night, I'll re-start posting Last Tin Soldier on Monday. Hopefully, I'll feel less like teh crap by then.

ETA:

And...Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick El-Jay. What the fuck?

Maybe it's because I feel like teh crap, but does any of that clear up anything? How many times can you possibly explain something and still be as clear as mud? I have a very simple solution to all of this: Tell us what your Abuse Team guidelines are. You know...the list of rules the LJ Abuse Team operates under? I assume they exist, right? Or am I hoping too much?

And is it me? Or is the LJ's timing somewhat suspect? The Great LJ Strikeout of 2007 was just before Memorial Day in the U.S. when most of the U.S. user base was off-line. This "clarification" of their policies which raises a fuckload more questions than get answers is released during a time when a significant portion of fandom (and not just hard-core Harry Potter fans) have voluntarily stopped Web surfacing.

Thanks that make you go "Hmmmmm...."

Look, for people who are really thinking this is last-straw time, seriously consider moving over to InsaneJournal where the ToS is pretty simple and clear-cut, and the cost is: $10 for 6 months, $20 for 1 year; $40 for a permanent. Seriously. This is the best of the alternatives I've been using so far and I really do heartily recommend it. Its user interface and compatibility with posting clients is on par with El-Jay, and it's policies are a hell of a lot better for end-users.

Besides, at least InsaneJournal is somewhat active. GreatestJournal is a ghost town, pretty much (and for good reason...Gee-Jay's policies and occasional "housecleaning" actions don't make a whole lot of sense).

'Scuse me. I have to go know. Because, I think I just used that spike of outrage to fuel this post and am feeling even more teh crap then when I started writing this.

I'm definitely going to have to send a check I-J's way, because I'm really fed up with the same old crap from LJ. *rolls eyes* And I'll just leave a signpost saying "I went thataway..."

With maybe some parallel posting. But definitely going down to a free LJ account. Meh.

Feel better soon!

[identity profile] darkluna.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I made a Greatest Journal account during Strikethroughgate, but if everyone seems to be migrating to IJ, I think I'll go there too. Though LJ's policies will probably not TOS me or anything I especially care about, I'm bothered that they're being so wishy-washy about what's OK and what isn't and not telling anyone what their metric is.

[identity profile] fufumira.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad this book is almost out. Because seriously, I'm not a spoilerphobe, and my job is so boring, it sometimes makes me want to cry. And most of my favourite people, people that entertain me and bring me joy are not posting. Stupid people that be spoiling others that don't want to be spoiled. They are ruining everything.

/end whiny rant

Feel better by the by. Looking forward to Monday! (that feels wrong)

The timing is really, really suspect. There's no way that wasn't deliberate. They need to *actually* clarify things, and they need to do it now. Actually, they need to do it two months ago.

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The LJ/6A minions in that thread are particularly irksome (and why is it that their defenders are such a pack of trolls?). Suggesting that their lack of communications ability is not likely to lead to long-term success is "rude."

I'm sure that in their staff meetings they have a plethora of BINGO boards and drinking games and their own version of Jurisimprudence, and in addition laugh about the idea that it's a good thing to remain on their customers' good side. They point to MS and say "those guys did pretty well treating their customers like dung." Problem being, they are not the big boys in Redmond, and their product isn't an operating system and related software but a means, really, of online recreation. Neopets, rather than Windows, y'know?

Julia, tired of the utter incompetence of most of the tech sector.

To be honest I'm not feeling very much annoyed anymore. Yeah the LJ people have the communication skills of a Neanderthal on crack, but when in comes right down to it, they've basically gotten over their scare and are now thinking that minors having sex is fine so long as it's got some artistic merit to it. If something happens again that threatens law suits or the like then maybe they'll have to reconsider, but that's just the way it is. It's not like we can fault them for not wanting to break the law, or at least not wanting to be caught doing it. I mean fandom may be a large family of love, but we all know we're in the legal shadow zones at the end of the day.

[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is even if the law they're relying on to say that any stories involving minors is illegal (which is Obscenity laws rather than pornography or child pornography laws) were crystal clear they're only applying it to stories involving people under 18. So a sexually explicit story involving a 20 year old and someone on they're 18th birthday LJ would let slide, but exactly the same story involving someone the day before they're 18th bithday then LJ would claim that it's obscene and it's the law that says it's obscene. It's not the fact that they're covering themselves legally (and even what they're arguing is shaky legal ground) it's the way they're applying it that's getting my back up.

[identity profile] rivana.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That's just burr being unclear, he clarifies later in the comments, as well as in his next post what they really mean. http://community.livejournal.com/lj_biz/241428.html
Honestly, it's really not that bad at all.

I'm so sorry you're feeling bad, Liz! *offers chicken soup and dancing Dork!Angel for your viewing pleasure*

And is it me? Or is the LJ's timing somewhat suspect?

It is NOT you. Especially considering:

1.) HP is the largest fandom directly effected by this

2.) Potterporn is the least like by and least justifiable to the mainstream, non fandom community at large.

LJ = MADE OF HUGE FAIL

Feel better soon, sweetie. Thanks to your input, I'm seriously considering changing from GJ to IJ for my backup and possible moving needs. :)

[identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
As an experiment we reported a story of mine which has explicit underage non-con sexual content. LJ Abuse said it was OK and did not violate the TOS.

Was that before or after these posts?

[identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
After. I posted the story last night. It was reported several time. And everyone got the same note back from LJ abuse. I'm not hopeful that they won't say otherwise at a later date... but...

:D I do terrible things to him in my fics.

Feel better soon. Try not to let all the craziness get to you.

We're going to dive right into the book in an attempt to avoid friends spoiling us. Usually it's unintentional but it's very annoying. I admire your attitude that you won't let the spoilers rush you.
