More on WKRP!

Okay. I know you're all probably sick and tired of me wibbling on and on and on and on about WKRP in Cincinnati coming soon to a DVD set near me. (Yes, I have my Amazon pre-order in because OMIGAWDMUSTHAVE!)

TV Shows On DVD has put up the press release detailing the list of episodes, the list of extra features, and showing the set artwork.

EeEeEeEeEeEeEeE!!!!!
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
*note that the sound above is bigger than *flail* or *squee* times a bajillion*

Okay, to be honest the extras aren't all that great. Loni Anderson is the only one doing any commentaries with show creator Hugh Wilson. And that they're doing commentaries only on the Pilot episode and the infamous 'Turkeys Away.'

There are two making-of featurettes. One is on a 'A Fish Story' and the other is on something called 'Do My Eyes Say Yes?' (I don't recall this ep and its definitely not listed on the S1 box set An AnonyMice informs me that this is a line that was uttered by Jennifer, Loni Anderson's character, so it's probably a featurette on Jennifer.)

In either case...as long as I get the full first season, you'll still be hearing this:

EeEeEeEeEeEeEeE!!!!!

To celebrate, here's a 5-minute clip from the pilot. And remember fellow babies...BOOGER!!!!

Do My Eyes Say Yes

I think "Do my eyes say yes?" is a line Jennifer says in an episode. So it's probably a featurette about Jennifer.

Yes, I seem to remember her with her hands on her hips saying that to Herb....

[identity profile] omegar.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm i think it is time i got my self a "Netflix" queue just to chuck stuff like that on it.

I don't think i have ever seen an episode of that show before, but it looks good......not sure i want to buy an entire series without seeing some of it!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you.

WKRP is on of those classic sitcoms that Yanks of a certain age love and adore, and that's why certain lines from the show have sort of made it into pop-speak. They're not catchphrases, just these one-liners that were so memorable that people quote them to each other.

What's added to the mystique is that WKRP has never been released on homevideo or DVD — despite it being one of the top-requested shows for those mediums — in large part because of music rights issues. The series takes place in a radio station that plays modern rock (read late 70s and early 80s), and a lot of those rights have not only expired, but the cost of re-purchasing those rights are astronomical.

I apparently for the DVD release they went with a mix-and-match approach (some original songs were kept, some were replaced by other songs). So, yeah...there is much bubbling of excitement in certain quarters because it's been something like 25 years since this show went off the air and it's probably the first time many of us will be seeing it again since it left first-run broadcast.

yeah, i don't think it crossed the Atlantic divide for us.

Ah well. I must say that checking teh cup to see what the surname should be is either comic genius or comic genius!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's even funnier when you see the set-up for that quick double-take earlier in the episode. The fact you laughed at the joke without the set-up is pretty amazing. :-)

Be on the lookout for the amazing moving band aid on Les Nessman. It was never directly referred to in the series, but I think it shows up in every single ep of the series.

I was surprised looking at the episode list for S1 how many of the classic episodes are packed into that one season. That's not to say the other seasons aren't as strong (they are), but what's stunning is that the episodes that are most often quoted are in that first season.

I Don't think i am laughing at the same joke. In my head it seems like he has being so bored by the music he is playing (which is shown by him being asleep at the start of the clip) he has turned his brain off, and so can't remember his own surname.

Though i am sure it is some other joke.

I may not to get to see this for awhile... mores the pity..

That show certainly leaves an impression. The censorship ep where Mr. Carlton quotes Imagine comes to mind every time I have to listen to someone's one true way and "the phone police" has been a permanent part of my vocabulary since forever. :D

D

Some of us even learned the parts of the atom before we covered it in school. :-)

But, yeah, the censorship episode was fantastic. And the phone police makes me laugh myself sick

BOOGER! GOODBYE ELEVATOR MUSIC!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY!

What's really funny is I remember them even doing a show on Clear Channel-like conglomerate moving into Cincinnati and trying to hire away Venus (I think it's 'Venus Rising' in either S2 or S3) to serve as their "front man" and "minority face" for the community, but that the programming was mostly from a centralized location and was automated without human interference (like the current Jack FM format.

So, yeah. Talk about your modern-day elevator music...Clear Channel is it.

[identity profile] halfmoon-mollie.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, GOD I loved that show. It was just the right cast at just the right time. None of them was ever as good or as funny anywhere else.

And remember, fellow babies.....

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What really astounds me is how much older the cast is than you'd expect. Most of the cast members were their mid-30s to pushing 40 (the youngest cast member was Jan Smithers, and she was 29 when the show started; the oldest was Gordon Jump, and he was 45 when the show started).

I can't even imagine a modern-day workplace sitcom using a cast of actors who are in their 30s, including the sexy blonde bombshell (who, I must add, would've been ordered to lose weight sometime during the first season...assuming they'd hire her to be the bombshell and not Mama Carlson). A domestic sitcom wouldn't even do it (obligatory cute kids are required).

I'm being serious. The age of the cast is the thing that really jumps out at me in looking at the clips. It's stunning to think how much has changed (and not necessarily in a good way) over the past 25 years.

[identity profile] halfmoon-mollie.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Gary Sandy had (and the record still holds, I think) the nicest pants in television. Especially from the back...

And Loni Anderson has never been as pretty as she was in that show.

Stop it, stop it, I'm going to cave in and buy this....

Hey! You can't say Booger on the internet.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
BOOOOOGGGGEEEER!

[identity profile] halfmoon-mollie.livejournal.com 2007-02-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
YOu are an evil woman, and I will receive my package around the same time you'll receive yours.

****SQUEEEEEEEEEEE****

I notice my favorite episode, the one with Hoyt Axton, is on it, too.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure they have permission to use Hoyt's song at least. That was a good episode.

[identity profile] halfmoon-mollie.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved Hoyt. So talented, so sweet.

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, I loved that show!
That clip brought back all kinds of memories. Now I'm going to have to go and buy the DVDs.
Bouger!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The pre-order is practically 50% off so it's a reasonably good deal. There really isn't too many clunkers in the series, and even those have something redeemable about them.

[identity profile] 1-mad-squirrel.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to have such a crush on Andy. Television would not see pants that tight or hair so feathered again 'til Fez on That 70's Show

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2007-02-10 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Andy...the reap Captain Tightpants fer shur. Gary Sandy did have a better butt than the guy who plays Fez to boot.

Yes, indeed.

*goes to happy place*
