Intreresting Links of the Day

via [livejournal.com profile] audiography: CDs may be going the way of the Dodo, some whining about the future of the music industry as people more and more go to electronic formats.

However, there appear to be some some bright spots on the horizon, including "subscription" music services like Rhapsody and Emusic that allow unlimited access to songs for a monthly fee, as opposed to Apple's "per track" business model. There also appears to be a growing resurgence in the beauty that is the vinyl record among true audiophiles seeking sound quality.

via [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick and [livejournal.com profile] jebbypal: Getty images is tracking down people who have infringed on their copyright and aggressively going after them.

If you've raided Getty for icons or for your fansite and haven't ponied up a penny, you might want to start yanking down those pictures...as in yesterday.

Finally, Will Wheaton has his latest ST: TNG DVD commentary up at TV Squad. C'mon, people. It's for Part II of 'Encounter at Farpoint.' As always, expect a good time reading it.

Dr. Crusher steps around Wesley, and tells Picard that she's reporting for duty, and Wesley is her son. The audience isn't quite sure what's up between them, but it sure seems like there's something going on there. Will anyone have the courage to write even one word of slash fiction about them? Oh, we can only hope.

I dunno, I learned the hard way the beauty of cds back when my harddrive decided to crap out on me and I lost quite a bit of music. Even if one buys music online, backing up to cd (even if the music companies frown) is a must if it's something you really like.

Best line in Wil Wheaton's review: Q is really like a stupid Internet Troll; he makes some stupid accusation against Picard, Picard refutes his argument with logic and reason, and Q just changes the terms of the argument, all the while enjoying the attention he's getting.

Snorffle.

LOL!

When those doors opened and Wesley looks out at the bridge like he's Lindsay Lohan with a bag full of blow at an all you can binge and purge buffet, it wasn't acting.

That is brilliant. I so enjoy reading his stuff. :)

Hey, as long as you're taking your time and not moving the story forward at all, why not have a pod race?

I think I must steal this line and use it. ;-)

Thanks for giving the heads-up about these reviews ... I would have missed them otherwise.

You know what I've always been confused and amused by? I've seen horrible fights and accusations in the BTVS/ATS fandom (the only one I'm involved in) over photo and image stealing. For example, one website or LJ will post pics of David Boreanaz, and then the same pics will show up on another website or journal, and the first will accuse the second of *stealing* the pictures from them. I'm not talking about bandwith either. I'm talking about the first party or parties claiming *ownership* over the pictures. In my mind, if the first part wasn't the photographer, and didn't actually take the pictures themselves, or buy them with permission to repost them wherever, they have no right to get angry at anyone else for reposting them.

I've seen so many ridiculous claims by websites that they *own* pictures they clearly scanned from newspapers, magazines, or downloaded from DVDs.

Aren't both the first and second parties stealing the images from the *actual* owners? It doesn't really make you the owner if you go to a *great deal of effort* to download pictures or scan them into your photobucket or flickr account. None of that makes you the *owner* of the image, does it?

I don't know. But I see a lot of silly fights and grandiose claims on the internet over things like this. If all companies start doing this, nearly every fan of all kinds of media could be caught with stolen images. Nearly all my icons are made from images that don't belong to me.

:shrugs:

There also appears to be a growing resurgence in the beauty that is the vinyl record among true audiophiles seeking sound quality.

I've never understood this arguement. I grew up with records and I as far as I could observe once CDs came out 99.9% of the listening world went OMG and generally threw out their vinyl! There's supposed to be some sort of 'warmth' that is missing from CDs isn't there? IMHO what's missing are all the crackles, pops and hisses that spoiled the recording. Particularly when you take into account that the problem gets worse with every playing of the record whereas a CD is always perfect.
