vichan asked for songs about death so she could put together a soundtrack for her NanoWriMo project.She quickly learned a very important lesson: "do not ask such things when the person on your FList with 14GB of MP3s on their home computer is struggling with being too brain dead to write something that isn't utter shit."
Bet she's glad I didn't start digging into the 2,000-plus CD collection.
Below the cut are 16 songs I tossed up on Savefile for her. It isn't a soundtrack, since it's just 16 random songs in no particular order. Also, some of the artists and track listings are misspelled on the project page because I was doing it on the fly and some of these songs I've posted here as part of other soundtracks or musical downloads.

I've never put this track up here before. I have a CD by this group and they're quite good. Think of them as a more modern version of Anonymous 4. This track is from their 1999 album, Worldes Blysse.

This tune comes from the extraordinary Drunken Lullabies. It was practically a gimmie to use on my now-defunct Upon Hearing About the Death of Sunnydale fan soundtrack, which was tragically lost when the Savefile servers crashed and burned back in September.

I love the sad instrumental in this one. This tune appeared as the first track on in my double-CD Xander in Africa Soundtrack fanmix. Just FYI, I'm thinking of reloading the monster soundtrack once I complete Facing the Heart in Darkness, only this time I'm cutting out the commentary for it.
Ghost of Mae West — Trailer Bride

This incredibly creepy tune is off Trailer Bride's High Seas CD. I had offered this as part of Dead Like Me's Daisy Adair character mini-soundtrack in my Multi-Fandom Character Mini-Soundtrack Project, which was also tragically lost when the Savefile servers crashed in September. I'm working on organizing some the different soundtracks so I can re-upload the tunes one fandom at time.

From her solo CD, The Other Side of Time. While I haven't shared this tune before, some of you might recognize her voice. She is the former lead singer of October Project and I had reviewed both their CDs, October Project and Falling Farther In, and offered sample downloads from them as part of my Music from the Cube posts.
Quattro (Live) — Calexico

This song is from their genre-breaking Feast of Wire CD. However the track I'm offering here was actually downloaded from the Internet Archive: Live Music Archive. Performances like this are the reason why the archive exists, and why smaller acts like Calexico give permission for fans to record and upload their concerts. I'm currently using this as my unofficial theme song for Nobody Never Gets to Heaven.

There's this Newfie band, see? And they're this awesome band, see? AND YOU WILL LOVE THEM EVEN IF I HAVE TO YELL! *ahem* I'm thinking I should just give up and give them a big ol' Music from the Cube overview sooner rather than later. This song really highlights the group's vocal strengths. A track off of Rant and Roar.

Edwin McCain's lyrics are about as subtle as a brick over the head. Sometimes you roll your eyes. Sometimes you cry from the pain. Break out the tissues on this one, kids. It's gonna be a bumpy song.

This tune from Some Devil has always creeped my shit out. The more tired I am, and the later the hour, the more creeped I am. I had offered this as part of Homicide: Life on the Street's Frank Pembleton character mini-soundtrack in my Multi-Fandom Character Mini-Soundtrack Project, which also disappeared in a puff of electrons when the Savefile servers crashed in September.
Days Go By (Acoustic) — Dirty Vegas

Before you groan and roll your eyes about the inclusion of this song, let me just say something in my defense. You know how some songs that get "popped up" thanks to the magic of ProTools? And then when you hear that exact same song in a completely different context and you wonder how you could've so badly misinterpreted it? This is one of those cases. Seriously. Once you hear this version, you'll never, ever go back to the other one.
Strange Fruit — Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday. A song about lynching under Jim Crow. Like this was not going to be part of the package. If I'm in the right frame of mind when I hear this song, tears will still sting my eyes.
