Big 16-Song Download
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
She quickly learned a very important lesson: "do not ask such things when the person on your FList with 14GB of MP3s on their home computer is struggling with being too brain dead to write something that isn't utter shit."
Bet she's glad I didn't start digging into the 2,000-plus CD collection.
Below the cut are 16 songs I tossed up on Savefile for her. It isn't a soundtrack, since it's just 16 random songs in no particular order. Also, some of the artists and track listings are misspelled on the project page because I was doing it on the fly and some of these songs I've posted here as part of other soundtracks or musical downloads.
The link at the end of the track listing goes directly to the project page.
Click, download, and enjoy the tunes! Please comment if you do.
How Death Comes — Mediaeval Baebes
[Support the Artist]
I've never put this track up here before. I have a CD by this group and they're quite good. Think of them as a more modern version of Anonymous 4. This track is from their 1999 album, Worldes Blysse.
If I Ever Leave This World Alive — Flogging Molly
[Support the Artist]
This tune comes from the extraordinary Drunken Lullabies. It was practically a gimmie to use on my now-defunct Upon Hearing About the Death of Sunnydale fan soundtrack, which was tragically lost when the Savefile servers crashed and burned back in September.
Don't Fear the Reaper — HIM
[Support the Artist]
Creepy remake of the the classic. Another track that appeared on now-defunct Upon Hearing About the Death of Sunnydale fan soundtrack.
Ashokan Farewell from Songs of the Civil War by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason with Fiddle Fever
[Support the Artist]
I love the sad instrumental in this one. This tune appeared as the first track on in my double-CD Xander in Africa Soundtrack fanmix. Just FYI, I'm thinking of reloading the monster soundtrack once I complete Facing the Heart in Darkness, only this time I'm cutting out the commentary for it.
Ghost of Mae West — Trailer Bride
[Support the Artist]
This incredibly creepy tune is off Trailer Bride's High Seas CD. I had offered this as part of Dead Like Me's Daisy Adair character mini-soundtrack in my Multi-Fandom Character Mini-Soundtrack Project, which was also tragically lost when the Savefile servers crashed in September. I'm working on organizing some the different soundtracks so I can re-upload the tunes one fandom at time.
Each Dollar a Bullet — Stiff Little Fingers
[Support the Artist]
A bonus track from the Belfast punkers' Flags & Emblems. Pretty much echoes what my thoughts were growing up in the greater Boston area during the '80s surrounded by IRA supporters.
Photograph — REM and Natalie Merchant
[Support the Artist]
From the compilation CD, Born to Choose. I used this one waaaaaaay back in Part 5 of Water Hold Me Down.
Going Home — Mary Fahl
[Support the Artist]
From her solo CD, The Other Side of Time. While I haven't shared this tune before, some of you might recognize her voice. She is the former lead singer of October Project and I had reviewed both their CDs, October Project and Falling Farther In, and offered sample downloads from them as part of my Music from the Cube posts.
Quattro (Live) — Calexico
[Support the Artist]
This song is from their genre-breaking Feast of Wire CD. However the track I'm offering here was actually downloaded from the Internet Archive: Live Music Archive. Performances like this are the reason why the archive exists, and why smaller acts like Calexico give permission for fans to record and upload their concerts. I'm currently using this as my unofficial theme song for Nobody Never Gets to Heaven.
Independence Day — Martina McBride
[Support the Artist]
I'm thinking of putting together a new fanfix and one of the possible themes I'm considering is "Snapshots from the New Slayers on the Day They Became Strong." This tune is sooooo going right on there.
General Taylor — Great Big Sea
[Support the Artist]
There's this Newfie band, see? And they're this awesome band, see? AND YOU WILL LOVE THEM EVEN IF I HAVE TO YELL! *ahem* I'm thinking I should just give up and give them a big ol' Music from the Cube overview sooner rather than later. This song really highlights the group's vocal strengths. A track off of Rant and Roar.
Wuthering Heights — Kate Bush
[Support the Artist]
Hate the book. Love the song.
Prayer to St. Peter — Edwin McCain
[Support the Artist]
Edwin McCain's lyrics are about as subtle as a brick over the head. Sometimes you roll your eyes. Sometimes you cry from the pain. Break out the tissues on this one, kids. It's gonna be a bumpy song.
Gravedigger — Dave Matthews
[Support the Artist]
This tune from Some Devil has always creeped my shit out. The more tired I am, and the later the hour, the more creeped I am. I had offered this as part of Homicide: Life on the Street's Frank Pembleton character mini-soundtrack in my Multi-Fandom Character Mini-Soundtrack Project, which also disappeared in a puff of electrons when the Savefile servers crashed in September.
Days Go By (Acoustic) — Dirty Vegas
[Support the Artist]
Before you groan and roll your eyes about the inclusion of this song, let me just say something in my defense. You know how some songs that get "popped up" thanks to the magic of ProTools? And then when you hear that exact same song in a completely different context and you wonder how you could've so badly misinterpreted it? This is one of those cases. Seriously. Once you hear this version, you'll never, ever go back to the other one.
Strange Fruit — Billie Holiday
[Support the Artist]
Billie Holiday. A song about lynching under Jim Crow. Like this was not going to be part of the package. If I'm in the right frame of mind when I hear this song, tears will still sting my eyes.

EEEK! Martina McBride's voice is oh so powerful.
I'd also recommend Rachel Proctor's Me and Emily and Sheree Austin's Streets of Heaven. If you want or don't have, I can upload when I get home...

I haven't chosen a theme yet (in fact, I might not do a mega fanfix this year), but the "On the Day of..." mix is one of my possibilities.

"Streets of Heaven" is powerful for another reason, involving a sick child.
"On the Day of..." is really interesting. There's so many variations that could be done...

As for WriMo? I'm British, it's supposedly a 'national' thing, so I pass. Actually, I just can't do fiction, but there y'go, it's a better excuse, right?

Have fun abusing the download.

When I used to write IT/computing courseware, I ended up writing about 50k words in a week when in crunch time to supply something for a client. I'm glad I'm not doing that any more.

I hope you do a review soon, though. :D
And wow, I didn't know that Mary Fahl had a solo project out. Excellent!
Thank you for the music; I need some NaNo inspiration too, and your musical choices always perk me up.

And I call your 14 GB and raise you 161 GB (roughly) ;-)
One of these days when I have the time to just putter around on the computer for days on end, I plan on reorganizing it all by year of release. That will make it much easier for me to find stuff, thanks to the way my musical brain is wired.

Either way, you can download the trial versions of Music and MP3 Collectorz and if you decide to buy, you can get a "lifetime license" to updates and the full software at a discount. Both have very powerful search engines and "year of release" is definitely one of the search parameters.
I'm pretty happy with the software, so if you want to give it a try, I'd recommend downloading the freebie versions to give it a spin.
And a 161 GB? On hard-drive? Yike!
See, this is why I'd really love one of those "it's a jukebox in your hand" portable MP3 players. The things I could do with one of those....

Actually, I recently upgraded from a 100GB external HD to a 300GB external which I use to store my music on. This keeps the laptop hard drive from getting filled up and slowed down. But, yes, currently I have 175 GB+ of music on the external, with a back up copy of it all on a data drive in my desktop.

Sometimes I wonder how I missed the lyrics so completely.
Water Hold Me Down
Word of advice: Don't start a huge new story and drag it out for months when there's already a big one that's not finished yet. It's one of my pet peeves with some of my favorite fanfic authors like Greywizard, who's juggling four or five of them, some of which haven't been updated in months or years.
Re: Water Hold Me Down
This is simple: I have real life things that have to be dealt with. I have a full-time job. I am not "dragging out" anything. Sometimes crap happens and a story unexpectedly takes far longer (as in six months longer) than you thought it would take.
Your question is legit, yes. I have said I will finish it, and I will. However, I have bigger priorities in RL than writing fanfiction 24/7. That's a fact.
Prodding me in an off-topic way in a post about MP3 downloads is not going to get you want you want any faster.

Cause' goddamn, that's a lot of CD's. And 14GB? Have you heard all your music? :)

Re. "jukebox in your hand:" I have my entire 67 GB collection on my 80 GB iPod (yes, I spent weeks ripping my entire CD collection). Nowhere near the size of your collection, but then again, I didn't get the Bordersverse discount thing like you. If I'd worked at a Borders or some other CD store when I was young 'n' single, I'd probably own 5,000 CDs by now. Anyway, as for the iPod, I can't tell you how much I love being able to listen to anything I own, no matter where I am. It's a beautiful thing. I strongly recommend you set aside some of the hard-earned for one. Or maybe just ask Mithras for one this holiday season.

It's been a while since I put together a themed playlist. I get so anal about it that I even make sure that the tracks will get played in an appropriate order - albums have to flow, after all. O_o *g*
And MAN I've written a lot today. Thank you, THANK YOU!
no subject
Wow, thanks
I'm wondering if the order is significant, or if you just were flipping through and adding tracks as you came across them?
And, I don't think I've ever been quite so pushy about your unfinished fic, but if I ever have been, I am truly sorry. I, too, was and am anxiously awaiting the end of Water Hold Me Down-- to the point that I boycotted your Facing the Heart for the longest time. But I eventually broke down, and I'm glad I did. And I certainly understand about Real Life.
Just know that your work is appreciated, whenever you get to it. As are your cool song downloads.

Photograph lyrics
And thanks again for introducing me to new music.

Re: Photograph lyrics
(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe/Natalie Merchant)
I found this photograph,
Underneath the broken picture glass
Tender face of black and white,
Beautiful, a haunting sight
Looked into an angel's smile,
Captivated all the while
From the hair and clothes she wore,
I'd place her in between the wars
Was she willing when she sat
And posed the pretty photograph?
Save her flowering and fair,
The days to come, the days to share
A big smile for the camera,
How did she know?
The moment could be lost forever
Forever more
I found this photograph,
Stashed between the old joist walls,
In a place where time is lost,
Lost behind, where all things fall
Broken books and calendars,
Letters script in careful hand,
Music too, a standard tune by
Some forgotten big brass band
From the threshhold what's to see
Of our brave new century?
The television's just a dream,
The radio, the silver screen
A big smile for the camera,
How did she know?
The moment could be lost forever
Forever more
Was her childhood filled with rhymes,
Stolen looks, impassioned crimes?
Was she innocent or blind
To the cruelty of her time?
Was she fearful in her day,
Was she hopeful, did she pray?
Were there skeletons inside,
Family secrets, sworn to hide?
Did she feel the heat that stirs,
The fall from grace of wayward girls?
Was she tempted to pretend,
The love and laughter, 'til the end?
