SOUNDTRACK: Xander in Africa — World on Fire

Welcome to Disc One of my Xander in Africa soundtrack, Xander in Africa: World on Fire.

I grant you (very readily) that not all of the songs are from Africa. The first disc has songs that are primarily in English. Disc Two (coming later this weekend) will have more world music on it.

The mix on this CD was specifically designed to have an overall mournful or meditative tone with bright splashes of optimism interspersed throughout the 18 tracks. These tracks were chosen to reflect a post-Sunnydale Xander attempting to make his way through the world for the first time without any safety net, a task made harder by the fact that he's still in mourning for everything he's lost. The bright splashes of optimism are external, the source being the Slayers and allies he picks up along the way. Harsher tracks are meant to evoke the struggle of trying to survive difficult conditions with little or no outside help. The disc ends on a vaguely hopeful note, with Xander both overwhelmed by his responsibilities, but vowing to keep fighting.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't give it up for [livejournal.com profile] mara_sho who designed the gorgeous cover art for discs one and two.

2. The Unforgiven from Songs of the Unforgiven
Crash Test Dummies
[Support the Artist]
The rock that ships run up against,
No matter how they tack;

Some are sinners, some repent, some are never done;
And then there's those like you and I:
The unforgiven ones...

3. Twilight from Be Not Nobody
Vanessa Carlton
[Support the Artist]

But as illusion dies I see there is so much to be revealed

Oh gods, oh gods
Let me fly
Send me to places

Begin!

7. La Ultima Hora from Cultura
Breed 77
[Support the Artist]
In a darkened place
Man without a face
Count on fingers the choices he could have made
Paint a picture of, view from up above, you
And soon he's painting in blood
And that man is me
La vida perdi
Now I'm casting a shadow in front of me
Now I've drained my heart so I no longer bleed

You act as if it never hurt you at all
Like I'm the only one who's gettin' up from a fall

15. Hunger from Blackhawk Down (Original Movie Soundtrack)

Life is getting harder on earth
Bloodshed grows and hunger is upon us

Ooooh, interesting musical choices there! :)

Hope you enjoy the tunes!

I was a little worried that it was too dorkalicious.

Whoo hoo! I knew there was a reason I checked my FL one more time before moving on to other things!

I'm looking forward to listening to this. I've got the Spike & Co. disc, but I think those are the only two tracks I've heard before. New music! New music!

Of course, I've got about a dozen bankruptcy paperworks to do over the next 8 days, including two tomorrow (later today now), so I'm not sure when exactly I'm going to listen. Maybe in the car going back and forth to work...

Thanks for all the effort putting this together!

Disc Two (the last disc) is coming in either Saturday night or Sunday during the day.

I so adore the Spike & Co. disc. Totally dug the PBS special when they showed it back in the day.

A test ran this on someone at work, and they said both discs were surprisingly good to work and work out too. (Hunh.)

[identity profile] faithhopetricks.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
YES! YES!

((grab grab grab))

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
You did mention the Spike & Co disc today. :-)

I didn't want to say anything because I wasn't sure if I was going to be dropping this tonight.

Wonderful, thank you for the new music.

Enjoy! More comng later this weekend!

I'm not into Buffy, but you get infinite points for using Darshan.

Thanks. :-)

Oh my goodness!! You used Once On This Island!!! Such a great show! Good job!!

How much do I love that soundtrack?

I bought two cassette tapes because I had to replace it when the first one exploded from overplaying. Then I invested in the CD when tape two exploded.

Scary but true: I've never actually seen the play. I first heard the entire soundtrack on my local NPR station and fell in love with it on that basis alone.

I so want to see it someday. Hopefully someone will do a revival so I can.

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fabulous! thank you for the wonderful music, Liz. Something tells me I'll be listening to it a lot.
Love the cover art.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank [livejournal.com profile] mara_sho for the cover art. Girl is way too talented.

Hope you enjoy the tunes. I'm still tweaking up the second CD (just a few tracks that need to get moved around), but I'm actually more pleased with CD 2 because it's mostly world music.

*fingers crossed that it goes over well*

Enjoy the tunes!

[identity profile] neytaritook.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
What an imaginative idea! Joy!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

For my next trick, the second CD in the collection.

[identity profile] fluffers.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Very cool concept. Well-deserved kudos.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. *bows*

I'm even more pleased with the second CD I'll be posting tonight. It's a collection of world music that I've pulled from my collection (scary that I actually own most of the source CDs for it).

If you donwload, enjoy the tunes!

[identity profile] tinyklutzygirl.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ashokan Farewell! *LOVES ON*

God, that song is amazing.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole CD is amazing!

I've often bought soundtracks that were so effective in movies/documentaries and have been disappointed. I have to give Ken Burns and his people props for their song choices for this CD. Some of the tracks still move me.

But Ashokan Farewell? That never fails to get you right in the heart.

Yay! You posted it! I've been looking forward to the final cut since I got the preview. I'm really amazed at how much work you put into this and the variety of music you've included. You really know how to build up the mood and atmosphere perfectly.

*burning files to disk as we speak*

Do you mind if (once you've uploaded the second disk) I put the cover art on my graphics site with a link back to you?

still downloading the last section, but I'm digging it so far! Feels like there should be a movie to go with it. :)

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I was planning to write liner notes, because it was designed with a storyline in mind.

But researching Africa up right is extremely time consuming and I couldn't get my hands around it like I wanted, especially with everything else going on in my life.

So, I figured after threatening to do it for 10 months, I might as well release the soundtrack into the wild.

[identity profile] trepkos.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks - I look forward to playing them - looks fab.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. This CD is my "easing into it" CD. I didn't want to overwhelm everyone all at once with the world music.

I hope you enjoy it. :-)

[identity profile] disinquietude.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm definitely downloading them all! This is fabulous. I'm not sure how much I'll like some of the songs, but I know I'll like a few of them and I'm so excited that 1) It's Xander! and 2) There is not ONE song on there that is a song that everybody uses.

And I am REALLY excited for the second installment... I love world music.

Very, very nice job.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The goal was to find songs that aren't generally used, so thanks for the comment on the uniqueness. :-)

The second CD is much more off the wall than this one. I guess I tend to view this one as more mainstream since most of the songs are in English. My issue is that only some of the songs have translations, so I've had to go by feel on some of it.

The only songs that I've seen recycled is 'World on Fire' and 'Frozen,' althought I've admittedly seen them on non-BtVS soundtracks (you'd think Sarah McLauchlan would sort of be a gimmie for BtVS, but I guess not this particular track).

[identity profile] bradycardia.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just downloading now. World on Fire itself is the only song I've heard before so I'm looking forward to listening. Thanks.

The DLs are good for 30 days (minimum), which is why I chose MegaUpload for this one.

Actually, the links are good for 30 days after the last download, so if someone downloads the files on day 28, the links will be good for another 30 days after that.

So, it's actually not a rush to get either disc at this point. You've got a month.

[identity profile] iyalode.livejournal.com 2005-10-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
House guests have gone and I now have unfettered access to PC. Thank god you didn't post this a week ago, chewing one's nails down to the quick is so unattractive.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
The downloads are good for a minimum of 30 days, so there wouldn't have been a race before extinction.

Actually, the reaosn why I chose MegaUpload was because the links remain good for 30 days after the last download. So, if someone downloads three weeks from now, they're good for another 30 days. (Yay!)

It's scary, but Disc One has been DL roughly 100 times already and Disc Two has been DL roughly 50 times.

[identity profile] ponders-life.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting to see how you rearranged the songs from the draft you sent me several months ago! I'm downloading the whole thing again just to make sure I 1) don't miss anything and 2) get the songs in the right order. Thanks again for broadening my musical horizons!

I love the cover art; [livejournal.com profile] mara_sho did a great job!

P.S. Remind me to extol the virtues of Anoushka Shankar and Vas/Niyaz next time I see you...

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Duuuude, I wish I saw this sooner!

I could've burned you the discs. I'm doing a set for someone already. It would've been no trouble doing another set for you (even if I don't see you tomorrow, it's no big delivering them).

I think it's mostly the order that changed. More of the world music wound up on disc two (I think it works better) and I think two or three tracks were swapped out (not sure at this point). I know I ended up with one extra track than the one in your hands.

Let me know what you think.

I'll be downloading both mixes. I'm especially interested to hear disc 2 as I adore world music. Thanks!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-09 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Heeee! on the icon!

I hope you enjoy them as I much as I enjoyed making them (the odd hair-tearing episode aside).

I tried to download this but it just keeps taking me to the premium page after saying there are too many connections from my IP address. I'm not sure what they mean by that. Is it available anywhere else at all please? Like yousendit or filefactory by any chance at all?

I would love to listen to it!

Alternate Download Site

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've uploaded all files for both CDs to an alternate download site called Share Big File.

Follow the instructions in my posts on LJ.

For some reason, FileFactory wouldn't work for me and YouSendIt was being twitchy about the uploads. Hopefully, the alternte site will help you get the files.

Thank you for making the effort to DL. :-)

And let me know if the new site works out.

[identity profile] singer-d.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Ditto - either the "too many connections" error or just a blank page after the 45 second wait, both last night and this morning. I've had good luck with http://sharebigfile.com if you don't like yousendit.

Alternate Download Site

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-10-10 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks to the link to Share Big File.

I've uploaded all files to it and you can download from there.

FileFactory wouldn't work for me and YouSendIt was being twitchy about uploading the files. Share Big File is awkward to use (for me), but it works.

The links are in my posts on LJ.

Let me know if you DL the files okay and let me know what you think of the tunes.
