Holy Cannoli!
I'm slightly overwhelmed. (Okay, just a little more than slightly...)
The White Knight Awards have been announced.
*squeeeeee*

Winning this one was a huge shock. Congrats to
m_mcgregor on my FList who took runner up.

Considering how long Living History is, I am very shocked. Congrats to
m_mcgregor on my FList who took runner up.

I have to still credit
musesfool for inspiring Contrite Spirits since it was part of her Psalm challenge.

I have to credit
nwhepcat for Water Hold Me Down since it was part of her Birthday Fic-A-Thon. Heh. I don't think either one of us expected it to get this out of control.
Also, congrats to
bastardsnow on my FList who took runner up.
Other people I need to congradulate on my FList who also scooped up awards:
Fleur, whose LJ name escapes me at the moment (yes, I feel very dumb);
nwhepcat;
airawyn;
mara_sho;
puguita;
entrenous88;
nemo_gravis;
booster17;
lwbush; and
d_tepes.
I cannot believe how many of us are friended on LJ. *shakes head in disbelief*
I was comparing last year's winners and this year's winners, and I have to wonder. Is it me? Or is there a complete tonal shift in the kinds of Xander stories that were nominated and the kinds of stories that won?
Seriously. I mean, there's a whole Xander fanon type missing from this year's winners. What makes it even weirder is that I know almost all of this year's winners were slaving away over fic last year and most of them were roundly ignored by readers for nominations or didn't win in their categories.
Hunh.
And no, that's not meant to be snarky at all, especially towards
mara_sho since she doesn't nominate or vote.
Not complaining, mind. In fact, I'm very pleased. I wouldn't have minded losing to any of the other authors and stories this year (in fact, I lost the Drama Fic award category). Last year, on the other hand...
So, a round of big love for
mara_sho, who not only rescued I Need a Parrot from the dustbin, but who also revived and has run the White Knight Awards two years running.
Thank you so much for the personalized banners! Mine were dead-on perfect!
However, in deference to people on dial-up, I had to put them behind the cut.
So please, click on the cuts and see them!

I know what you mean about the shift in nominations from last year to this, I think perhaps the rule that said previous winners could not be nominated in the same category again confused some people a little. Which in turn led to a lot of people who were nominated in the last round not being nominated this round.
Or perhaps people noticed the complete dominance of one particular author in round one (it has to be said that it was the result of massive block voting which pushed that person to the top of nearly every category they were nominated in) and people who otherwise would have nominated the excellent fics that are out there gave this round a miss.
I've also not been as active on many of the mailing lists as I was during round one so there was a lack of advertising for the awards going on.
I'm going to work on the rules again, make them clearer, and pimp round three around in a lot more places. Nominations for that will probably open up later in the year. Of course, perhaps me setting a clear time scale for the awards would help!
And I'm so glad you like the banners! The 'Water Hold Me Down' one had me stumped for a while - how do I show an older Xander who is still with Anya when the only pictures I have of that are candid shots from conventions? *g*

As for the absence of that "certain type of fanon Xander," perhaps enough time has passed in Buffy-fandom (and Xander-fandom specifically) that the emergence of a slightly more sophisticated audience and/or writer was inevitable. Not trying to be elitist or dismissive or arrogant. It's sort of like the evolution of comic books in America -- you can't have things like DC's Vertigo imprint, Sandman, or even just the more sophisticated superhero comics without all those seemingly silly stories from the fifties and sixties about Superman & red kryptonite, Batman & different variations of his costume, or all the comics with gorillas on the covers. (Seriously, the folks at DC have for years maintained that one of the golden age of comics' surefire sales gimmicks was that comics with an ape on the cover somehow always sold more copies than the ones without an ape. Go figure.)

Incidentally I'd already checked the site for the winners earlier. I thought this years selection was way better then the previous 'Xander gets a power' crowd as well. Major increase in quality. Though I'm still eternally grateful to White Knight for pointing me to D-tepes post S7 fic. Lurking all over the place really does pay off.
Congrats! Congrats! Congrats!

It was a foregone conclusion, your work is so good. Congratulations on the awards!
As for the tonal shift, I had no idea what you were talking about until I checked last year's winners. Maybe most of the fanfic readers who enjoy that sort of fic have outgrown the need for it now.

Congrats!!
Well deserved.

(Anonymous) 2005-07-03 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)Who knew there was this much *good* fic being put out these days!
Is is just me, or does it seem like the majority of the most egregious badfic writers have moved on to shinier pastures and left a much larger percentage of quality writers behind?
Not that I can't still find masturbatory Spuffy songfic inspired by Evanescence on the Pit of Voles, but some things never die. Like cockroaches.
