This is weird...

First time I've managed to get online almost all week and I can't seem to go anywhere but LJ.

Hunh.

Anyone else having this problem?

ETA: Wow! Who knew all my Comcast peeps were having teh suck on the Internet tonight?

I'm actually on Verizon and it turns out my problem was a particularly nasty piece of SpyWare. God bless Norton Firewall, that was the little bugger that kept shutting down my connection because it didn't like this SpyWare at all.

I can only assume that I could get to LJ because of lack of ads. *scratches head* Seems this SpyWare was trying to redirect information somewhere and Norton Firewall kept stepping in and blocking traffic, hence my inability to go anywhere.

*blows kisses to Symantec, which is located right acrss town*

I ran Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition (rockin' freeware, by the way) and now I'm cruisin' in style.

Someone else on my flist reported something like this, too.

There seems to be a rash of it.

Looks like Comcast got hit with something. In my case: Spyware was the culprit. All fixed now. :-)

Comcast? Yup. Apparently things like google and netflix and yahoo do not exist, but for some reason I can get to LJ. And I have no email or Irc! Very weird.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Verizon.

I was wondering if there was a router out on the Internet somewhere because it seemed strange that I could go some places fine but not other places.

Also, it seems like people on Comcast from all over are having "issues" tonight.

As for me: SpyWare. Norton kept shutting it down, but shutting me down at the same time. Thank you Ad-Aware SE for getting rid of it.

Put this into your browser:

64.233.161.106

See if that takes you to gmail. If it does, you have a DNS issue. Otherwise? No clue.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. It was Norton Firewall beating up on a nasty piece of SpyWare that somehow ended up on my computer. I ran Ad-Aware SE and is all fixed now.

That said? Looks like Comcast people are having issues tonight. I'm on Verizon, so I'm actually good.

[identity profile] stephanierb.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)

Hmm, I have Comcast as well and I'm experiencing the same problem. I also live nearby so maybe it's something in the greater Boston area? I don't know, but I've been having a hard time getting my email and it's really irritating.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. I'm on Verizon.

In my case, it was Norton blocking a nasty piece of SpyWare that was trying to shift information to an unknown place. Of course, my firewall went overboard (as Norton always does) and was literally shutting down all traffic except to my designated "safe sites."

One pass with Ad-Aware SE and I removed it. So I'm good now.

I'm on Comcast in NJ and it's been horrible all night.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Wow. Comcast nationwide is having issues! Check below in this comment thread and someone on Comcast in Seattle is having problems.

I'm on Verizon, so it's a totally different issue. Turns out it was a SpyWare running headlong into the brick firewall that is Norton. Norton won, but failed to tell me what was wrong.

One pass with Ad-Aware SE and I got rid of the SpyWare causing the problem, so I'm good now.

[identity profile] faithhopetricks.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Comcast? Ooooh yeah -- been able to get to LJ OK, not Gmail, nor the local bank, Emusic, and so on....

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Suddenly, Verizon looks awesome.

Seriously, in my case I was invaded by SpyWare and my Norton Firewall was shutting me down because this nasty piece of code was trying to send information out.

I don't know if Norton Firewall was simply steering me away from sites with ads (which seemed to be mostly the case, although it doesn't make sense that I couldn't get to Google at all) or if it was because LJ is on my designated safe list. Either way, once I ran Ad-Aware SE and removed the SpyWare, it got fixed.

Ad-Aware ROCKS. Comcast SUCKS. (This is my brain. This is my brain on no caffeine. Any questions?)

Comcast esp in our 1912 building sucks, because the wiring is whack anyway, and when it RAINS (in Seattle!) the power and cable inevitably fritz out. Yay for infrastructure....

[identity profile] faithhopetricks.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Also, I live in Seattle. Wonder if it's network-wide....

Jesus. I never thought I'd see the day I was happy to have Cox...

Fuck, i wanna make that joke, but it's just too easy.

On a completely unrelated note, your icon just brought back the crawling horror I felt when I watched Rimsy and Listy kiss. So thanks for that. :)

I know what you mean...the first thing I thought of when I saw it was Rimmer shouting out .."No Tounge!! No Tounge you Smeghead!"

[identity profile] waleli.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
We recently switched to a very small local company who is trying to compete with Comcast (and winning in this area) I'm happy we switched!!!!!

[identity profile] captain-subtext.livejournal.com 2005-04-08 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
Ad-Aware is a excellent freeware, but it doesn't catch everything. You should combine it with Spybot and surprisingly enough Microsoft's Anti-spyware. With these three and Norton you should be pretty well covered.

Add me and mine to the list and we're in Michigan.

Comcast. Cow Hampshire. Anything involving a DNIS lookup was failing so I'm using a different address than normal. Guess it is a national problem...

Set

I'm in Savannah and had same problem with Comcast last night. So, anyone calling them up and asking them to pro-rate your bill?
