Kerry has conceeded

The numbers from Ohio must put victory out of reach.

Anyone see the grinning loon picture of our Idiot-In-Chief on CNN and want to do something randomly violent to their computer?

Blogging of the President: 2004 makes some predictions about what We Are Up Against. Remember. We need to keep fighting the coming erosion I see, thanks to a Republican death-hold on the legistlative and executive branches (soon to include the judicial branch).

At least The Yes Men have a theory on how we wound up in this mess.

"That's what's amazing about the discourse in this country," says Mike Bonnano, one of the two weapons-grade ironists behind Yes Bush Can. "People are so used to complete absurdity that nothing surprises them any more."

Amen.

Violent to my computer - and about half my country.

I don't suppose we could tell people we lived in states that voted for Kerry?

Either that, or I'm going to have to start sewing Maple Leaves on my clothing if I travel outside the country.

Dude, "I didn't vote for him" was one of the first phrases I learned in the native languages of every country I visited in Europe! When I studied abroad in 2001, they actually instructed us to remove any American insignia from our clothing or luggage.

Someone I know who's married to a bloke who has dual US / British nationality tells me that her husband has decided that he's not going to risk using his American passport the next few years.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
Smart man. At least a British passport is *marginally* safer than an American one right now.

[identity profile] nikitangel.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe it. Things are so messed up right now.

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
My condolances to you, and to all those Americans who had hoped for reason to prevail. Perhaps the only good thing about all this is the way it has motivated so many people to get out and become involved. I only hope that you don't give in to despair, and that you continue to fight for the soul of your country. There is so much that is good and worthwhile about the U.S. I wish you luck.
Either that, or I'm going to have to start sewing Maple Leaves on my clothing if I travel outside the country. Well, this Canadian wouldn't mind you doing that. My country isn't perfect either, but at least when we screw up, it doesn't have the same effect on the world. There is some benefit in being a smaller cog in the wheel.

My last Canadian relative died a two years ago. She wanted desperately for me to emigrate and attend college, just so she could have family in her back yard again.

Of course, she lived in Quebec City and my French is pretty iffy (good enough to get me around the Province, not good enough to do anything more than simple sales transactions).

The funny thing is I did go to the Canadian immigration Web site two years ago while she was still alive and took their "do you qualify" test and discovered that even without my aunt I did qualify for a work permit if I had a job offer waiting for me.

*sigh*

No, not planning to take a runner (yet), but I think the guy who owns my company was making jokes about relocating the company to Toronto.

I'm upset, but I am glad my little state as well as our swing state neighbor PA came out and represented. With the supposed "moral" issues up for debate I guess they had some socially liberal republicans and socially conservative democrats that just ended up going Dubya's way, unfortunately. I guess too many people think the republican party is the party for the people who go to church.

Ohio just surprises me a bit by voting consistently republican. It's kind of similar to PA, only the job/economic situation there is so much worse. I don't get it.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Truly Ohio mystifies me, although it was very close. I can't see how the urban and industrial areas can believe that Bush's domestic policies can be in any way good for them.

*sigh*

Why can't we have a "good Republican" running? At least make the choice a real choice. I rather like former MA Gov. Weld, although I can't imagine he'll be at all embraced as a national candidate in the new Republican Party (at least as it stands right now). I think Sen. Chaffee from R.I. (also Republican) is pretty close to following Jefford's (I-Vt) example and bolting the party to Independent.

I just can't believe Bunning in Kentucky won after his meltdown in the last few weeks. And Coburn down in Oklahoma just scares the fuck out of me.

There are some socially liberal/fiscally conservative Republicans at the edges of the party suggesting that four more years of Bush may actually ultimately end up fracturing the party into a religious party (similar to the Christian parties in europe) and a conservative party. Although I don't know. The Rove's discipline seems to have cowed a lot of otherwise brave souls on the Republican side of the aisle.

Nothing short of a national scandal is going to shake it, near as I can see. Although, given Halliburton, Abu Garib, the Iraq mess, and so on, I have to wonder what it'll take to shake the Red States' faith in the Smirking One.

*sigh*

::rolls up sleeves::

It's time to get to work.

As long as I can keep fighting maybe I can keep from crying.

I'll keep blogging. And linking to Progressive Blogs.

I'm just kind of numb at this point. I keep thinking "What next?" If Dubya announced himself President-for-Life during his victory speech it wouldn't surprise me a bit.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-11-03 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
I cannot even get myself to look at a newspaper right now.

I've been on the verge of tears all day.

numb

We turned off CNN after Kerry's concession speech, just as a sop to mental health. It's hard to watch the news right now. And I usually hate missing news....

I don't know if I've ever really cried over politics before. Felt sad, mad, angry, happy, sure, yeah. But not this kind of devastation....

[identity profile] damocleaze.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
You know..I am hearing a whole bushel of whining...Kerry lost...get over it.

You don't like Bush...get over it.

You didn't vote for him...oh well 51 to 52 percent of American Voters did.

All I am hearing is "Kerry lost so we should all give up on America being productive." Thats crap.
IF you guys truly believe that..then be my guest..those that live in this country...leave. Adieu...Bon Voyage...

Now...for those of you who decided to stay really wanna kick us Republicans in the butt, really get on our nerves and make us curse every day of our lives....Make yourselves useful. Go out in your communities and make a difference instead of spending your time posting on blogs and complaining about the President of the United States...he's got a hard enough job as it is and really doesn't need the added crap from hangers on. All this Doom and Gloom stuff ... yeah...pointless. Everyone likes to pile all the country's problems on old Dubya...but guess what...last time I checked...there were a lot of people under him that ran the government too...Why don't we hold them responcible too. Another little fact that people seem to miss...the President is NOT all powerful, remember that whole three branches of government deal we set up oh...say two and half centuries ago.

Maybe if Republicans and Democrats spent more time actually talking with one another ...and less time spitting in each others faces while we yell...something useful might happen.

Okay..I'm done...commmence the shooting.

I am a Democrat and I am very upset that Kerry lost as much as anyone..but I am hoping that those of you who are as upset as I am are going to try and do something about it. I, for example, am very active in the Democratic society and I'm also very active in NARAL..(don't jump on me..I have my reasons) Remember that there are MANY ways in which we can make differences in our country. Our country chose Bush to be our President..but that doesn't mean that we should concede defeat. Vote wherever possible..make your voice heard. And hope that the next Presidential Election will go better for us.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-11-04 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
No jumping from me. :-)

NARAL is a very tough gig.
