Oh, look. A new tool for stalkers!
Oh. Fuck. No.
I can understand having this feature available to people who are being harassed by stalkers and bullies, but making it open and general to every little monkey on the Internet? If you want to talk about a tool that stalkers and bullies can use, here it is!
Fuck. No.
JUST FYI to my FList: The default on this new feature is that all visitors to your LJ will be visible and that you will be visible to all every LJ and community you visit when you visit them, even if you don't comment.
If you want to remain "anonymous" while flitting around various journals and communities on ElJay, you have to click the "DO NOT WANT" option.
Here's the post about this new 'My Guests' feature on ElJay.
entrenous88 has better reading comprehension that I do. The post says that the option default is off. I jumped the gun on that because when I went to my privacy page to shut the option down, the radial button was on "YES DO WANT" option.
In either case, I've opted out of the system. I do reserve the right to opt-in should I get hit with trolls or stalkers, but short of having actual problems, this ElJay won't be tracking visitors.

I don't care who exactly -- anything sensitive is FL -- though I would sometimes like numbers. Hmm. I wonder if I could get Google Analytics to work for that. It'd pretty much give me numbers only.

The problem is that you have to insert the code into every individual LJ post, or at least the post where you want to track visitors (the ability to overlay your mood badges so it does it automatically is only if you pay for an account there).
Personally, I tried it and didn't find it worth the effort. It's useful if you're dealing with bullies, stalkers, or harassment, but beyond that I didn't find it worth dealing with.

. So until you enable it, it shouldn't announce you/track other visitors to your LJ.
I'm with you, btw. I think it's awkward and odd at the least, and creepy and obsessive at the worst.

I know I read it, but when I saw the widgety thing, I thought it had automatically made me sign up for it.

I've edited the journal entry and given you credit. :-)
What it comes down to is when I went to my privacy options to make sure that I was opted out, the radial button was on the "YES DO WANT" option. So I jumped the gun on flipping out.

All I'd want is a simple count option. LJ Toys has one, which also gives you the IP address of visitors, but you have to insert the code into every post, or at least in posts where you want to track visitors. It's kind of a pain and not worth it unless you have a reason to do it (the aforementioned stalkers and bullies...)

Yeah, honestly I think LJ Toys is odd too. If it was just IPs, eh, I can understand that. But you can turn on IP tracking by default with LJ without using LJ Toys, so I think it's actually something more. Doesn't it actually give you usernames as opposed to IP addresses? At least, the people I see talking about it under flock are often naming names, which I'm not sure how they would be able to do so unless they already had a matching IP with a direct comment from that person.

If they're signed out or don't have an account, it's just an IP address.
There was awhile where I was using it because I was dealing with AnonyMice issues (this was before I banned anonymous commenting completely) and I was trying to figure out if it was one person or just a random collection of people whose comments I was deleting day after day.
After a couple of weeks (and after I got slammed with a slew of nasty male AnonyMice over that stupid Open Source Boob Project), I threw up my hands and just shut down anonymous commenting completely. I haven't used LJ Toys since because I haven't needed to.
Also, an interesting thing: If you use Firefox and you're using ScriptBlocker, if someone on your FList is using LJ Toys, it'll register and block it (assuming you haven't done the whole "allow everything on livejournal" button press).

Huh, interesting. I forget what ScriptBlocker does besides that. *ponders* I haven't made my Firefox as customized as I could do.

We should plan a Hot Fuzz viewing soon, because it's one of the best movies ever.

In fact, there are similar options on Facebook and LinkedIn, but they don't bother me quite as much because I use those services for different and professional reasons.
I just have an awkward feeling about making the option generally available to anyone on ElJay because I can just see the issues cropping up.

Can you imagine? "You saw I was sad and you didn't comment!" "You read my fic and didn't leave me a response!" "I'm defriending you because you lurk -- I see you on the My Guests list! -- and never say anything, and it creeps me out!" Blech.
