Creating Our Own Television Schedule
I've just had a goofy idea:
You know how there are a ton of cool television shows that you've never watched but are now available DVD? Or via Hulu? Or via streaming through Netflix?
And you know how you want to watch them (or even re-watch them), but it's no fun unless you've got someone to squee with/debate with/argue with?
And you know how there's a lot of crap on television? As in, "I've got 185 channels and there's nothing on."
Well...what if we could put together a kind of television schedule of those shows you'd like to try, but haven't got around to trying? Or how about there are some shows you'd like to re-watch and see how the newbies react?
I think the ground rules should be the following:
Obviously the idea needs to be fleshed out, and I suspect that the TV shows up for vote may be heavily based on "what's in Liz's DVD collection/Netflix Instant Watch Que" at least for this first go-round.
A "season" would run for exactly as long as a season on the DVD. Then the group could vote whether to continue on to the next season in the series — although this may need refining because I could just see wank if the the "regular watchers" of a series all wanted to move on to the next season, but got outvoted by people who never watched the series and want to replace the show with something else.
So, POLL TIME!

I think the ground rules should be the following:
- It cannot be a show that's currently running (i.e., it's been canceled, so no Supernatural and no Smallville, for example, because those shows are still on the air)
- It has to be a show that is relatively easily available (i.e., Netflix, Hulu, On-Demand, etc.)
- "Programming" is one show per weeknight (i.e., Monday through Friday), with each night a different genre.
- No one is under any obligation to watch all 5 nights of "programming" (i.e., if a show is not to your taste, no one's going to make you watch it)
- "Programming" will be done by voting on the 5 shows that get picked
- Creation of a community to house the discussion (with the possibility of getting other mods to oversee each day of "programming")
Obviously the idea needs to be fleshed out, and I suspect that the TV shows up for vote may be heavily based on "what's in Liz's DVD collection/Netflix Instant Watch Que" at least for this first go-round.

...it'd be much more individualized and, unsurprisingly, you've come up with a much bigger, much better idea:P

As for all the hours...what you're suggesting is a huge commitment. I'm talking minimal commitment so that it remains fun without being a slog. Again, your idea is fine if you're doing it alone. Doing it as a group? Not so feasible logistics-wise because discussion threads for each one of those shows will need a moderator, and each one of those shows will need two separate threads (one for spoiled discussion, one for unspoiled discussion).
So, your idea is great...if you're doing it all by yourself.

I just wanted to comment on how yours was superior. It's like reading a book and recognizing a plot device you thought you'd dreamed up yourself! :-P

But people don't. *shrug* No clue why.
I'd be game for watching, but programming's probably beyond my present 'off my butt and do it' level =P

This is a very interesting idea, though I can see a few pitfalls, such as the possibly limited availability of DVDS on Netflix (I spent a good year trying to get my hands on Farscape DVDs, for instance), varying numbers of episodes of different shows' seasons (DLM is 17 eps, BCJ is 27, the average is generally 22), varying numbers of episodes on a disk (can be from, like, three to six or so, depending on length and format, I think), varying amounts of delivery time from Netflix depending on where you live (at my parents' house, I could get a new DVD literally the day after I mailed it out, first apartment, might take two days, from where I am now, it seems to take four), etc. etc. It's a lot of variables to try to keep track of for arranging a season, IMO.
Also . . . I'm having no trouble at all finding people willing to squee with me as I watch old shows (I'm currently barreling through Due South at ungodly speeds) and I suck at discussion groups.
But I'd be curious to see the process of setting something like this up, at the very least.

I know this may not be the direction you want to go, but I'd also be interested in something similar that /would/ allow current programming. There are many shows I've always meant to check out, but never got around to it, and I'm much less likely to do so if it's just me and my DVD player, you know?
