"This from a gal who hated High School Musical."

Yeah, but the two aren't remotely alike, except that they involve singing and high school.

For instance, I don't think you'll ever have a song in this one about keeping to the status quo. I think there's a thing called 'subtlety' that High School Musical has never in its entire life heard of, and that this show has in *spades*.

Also, you know, interesting characters, good writing, and good acting.

But yeah, right there with you.

Yes, this. This is what makes it work for me.

Of course, it works better in the original version of the pilot - which has a flashback to Will's early 90s Glee Club experience (along with a scene of the teacher whose photo he looks at in the present day) and a later scene of Will singing "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (aka Matthew Morrison actually gets to sing in the opening episode, which is what he was hired for, surely!) So try to find a download of that, if you can.

My current facebook status:

"Hooray for Glee. Someone took the concept of High School Musical and f----d that s--t up." (I go to a Christian university - expletives are frowned upon)

I had been depressed because there was only one more season of Lost left, Dollhouse wasn't up to Buffy standards, and Parks and Recreation was as much of a let down as recent seasons of The Office have been. Where was I going to find a show to completely obsess over? What was going to give my life meaning (except for, of course, that Jesus-thing the university is so fond of)?

Then there was Glee.
And the world was good again.
