I got an account through the Open ID lottery this morning -- maybe you will too? Unfortunately, they don't give me any invites for a free account. But if I get any, I'll let you know! :)
Log in using OpenID, validate your email, and just generally wander around and comment like you normally would.
They're slowly expanding the userbase to make sure the server can handle the load, so invite codes are becoming more common. I got mine from a friend who's leading the Docs team, and they gave all registered users an invite the day after I signed up (so my fiancée got it), there'll be more.
It's even possible my OpenID account might get one so I can send more out to people.
It's soo good. Lots of little niggling things from LJ are fixed, and the importer works brilliantly already, and it's not finished yet.
That's been a big thing for me, is importing things. My big concern was importing comments as well as the entries themselves and every system requires waaaaay more basic computing skillz than I've got.
I'm looking forward to playing with the system to see how it works.
I can be patient for an invite code. :-)
If I like what I see, I'll definitely kick in cash for the kitty, although the perm accounts are a little rich for my blood right now.
The Importer was just simple. It seems to have messed up a little bit for SB, she uses posting filters a lot more than I do and most of her stuff is filtered, and it's there but not showing any filters.
But everything, including comments, is in, and each comment is imported as an OpenID, so someone can login there and delete it, put a userpic up, etc if they want to.
They plan to let you associate OpenIDs with your main DW account, so you can then have all comments there assigned as you wish, which is even cooler. Plus, they want to get the importer to take stuff from Wordpress. If they get that sorted, then I really have found my dream blogging platform I think.
Now THAT sounds awesome. I have done a little commenting with my Open ID before I got my invite, and I would really like to tie the two together. I'll be looking forward to that capacity!
Whoops! It seems I've got two accounts over there now. :-)
I created an OpenID account this morning, but didn't get a chance to figure out what it could and couldn't do under that.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to play around with it tonight, either. I have to finish up with my tax paperwork so I can mail it out tomorrow to the Feds.

A bug I guess—see if that's worked? If not, report it, they jump people that do useful stuff up the invite queue.
