liz_marcs: Jeff and Annie in Trobed's bathroom during Remedial Chaos Theory (Xander LH)

Is it just me?

When I write a fanfic, I usually have a song in mind to keep me focused on the plot. I'm not writing "songfics" (gawd, I don't like them), but it seems if I have some lyrics in mind, I'm able to better focus on the goal of the story.

I've never had a whole soundtrack. Ever.

I just realized today that thanks to more than a year of writing, the number of plot elements, and the number of characters that I actually have a soundtrack for Living History

Scary.

If you're curious, the actual soundtrack is behind the cut. I don't have the capacity to share MP3s, but I've linked to the lyrics.

May have some minor spoilers, but nothing too bad at this point. Also, the lyrics may not precisely match the situations in Living History. It's more of an overall feel I was going for.

All songs are ordered according to corresponding matching point or, in the case of a character centric theme, in order of the character's most important moment.

*winces* Well, this really topped the wank-o-meter, didn't it?

I do this all the time. I have a huge playlist for my original novel, and smaller playlists for nearly everything I write. They set the mood and help keep me focused on what I'm writing.

Goodie. So I'm not a freako. :-)

I guess it makes sense that I'd end up with a "double album" set after a year.

[identity profile] norwegianne.livejournal.com 2004-09-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, wonderwall. I love that song.

I tend to do it as well. Sometimes it's hard getting into a mood when you want to write something, and then a song is quite useful.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oddly enough I go 50-50 on that. Whisper had the entire soundtrack to Sondheim's Into the Woods. Mars Rising had no soundtrack at all.

This is the first time I needed multiple songs to keep me moving.

I don't write, but I paint. Music always gives me ideas (which sucks when I'm listening at work). I swear there's images in those notes and lyrics. Robyn Hitchcock is a particular favorite. I can look at some things I've painted years ago and know exactly what I was listening to at the time. So for me, a soundtrack to your writing is nothing strange at all.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew a graphic designer that pretty much uses Prince. I also know a home decorator that, of all things, finds Marilyn Manson to be helpful.

Robyn Hitchcock is a good, tho' if you're picking musical muses. :-)

I knew there was a reason I liked you. LOL And not just because I love nearly every song on that list. Very cool. :) Guess I'll have to post my soundtrack when I finally finish RD'E.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeee! We should make it a challenge or something!

I'm actually surprised how many people recognize songs on the list. For me, this is pretty much middle of the road. I haven't trotted out the really obscure stuff in my (massive) collection like Switchblade Symphony or the Urban Knights.

This is the danger of working for Borders for any length of time. My CD collection is pretty daunting. I'm not even entirely sure what's in it at times. Then again, I got 75% of my collection for free (promo CDs that drowns the store on a monthly basis).

If anything, that's what I miss about working in Borders. That and the massive discounts on books and CDs. Plus borrowing books for free.

But not the salary. The salary was not good.

Fanfic Soundtrack

[identity profile] hjcallipygian.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I completely do the same thing. I actually score out the fiction as I'm writing it, like what I might have playing at certain times in the film, that sort of thing. And wank away, it's fun to get the little extras that come with a fic.

Re: Fanfic Soundtrack

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This "score" was completely by accident and completely subconcious on my part, so it's not normal for me.

Anyway, I hope you're doing okay because I know the GF left today for the Peace Corps.

(sends oodles of ice cream and fuzzy comfort clothes your way)

I don't sit around and think about what song would go perfectly, but when I write I have all my mp3 on and I put them on shuffle and sometimes the perfect song comes up. Other times, a song will just pop into my head when I'm outlining a chapter or scene. However, pretty much every time I'm writing there's a song that goes with it. Sometimes, there's just a song that goes with how a person feels.

For instance, "The Scientist" by Coldplay is Xander's song for Anya. "My Unbroken Reflection" by This Day Forward (hardcore song) is Katharine's song. "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" by Radiohead is the song for Connor waking and Faith discovering about Angel. "Like a Friend" by Pulp is the song for the end of the chapter I'm writing right now.

Thanks for the ice cream and comfort clothes. I splurged on High Fidelity (John Cusack version) and Angel S4 today and I've been watching DVDs all day. I'm already through the first eight episodes. Damn S4 rocks. You a fan?

wooo

[identity profile] suaveswede.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
You remarkably witty person you. Some of those were truly like
painfull puns but still. The one thing to compalin about would be sticking poor Willow with Green Day.

Re: wooo

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me. This particular song fits with Willow at the end of the fic.

Heeee, witty. I like that.

[identity profile] daniidebrabant.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I've had soundtracks for stuff, or listened to specific songs to get into writing a specific scene. One of my favorite Harry Potter fics has a soundtrack (not publicly; I beta for it and he's told me that the roots are in a particular song) and the way that song has part in the shape of the story is just great. As is your story and your soundtrack, just to make sure you know. I was so glad to see many of those songs on there since I love them (though I've never heard that GBS song you had listed so I'm curious to hear it now).

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Awww! I flove GBS. I got turned on to them when I was working at Borders. Shortly after, Sea of No Fears actually got some radio play in the Boston area.

"When I Am King" is actually off their new album. They're kind of continuing the trend of becoming the Celtic/Nova Scotia version of BNL that they started with Sea. It's a pretty bouncy tune.

As I was mentioned above, I'm actually a little surprised how many songs people recognize off the list. I thought one or two of them were a little obscure (Cliff Eberhardt and Shannon Curfman especially), but not as obscure as I thought I guess.

Or maybe my FList just has great taste in music.

[identity profile] camperx.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
That is one heck of an eclectic mix. One thing, though - Not that it matters at all, but have you heard the original version of Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn? If not, then I heartily recommend it - IMHO it's far superior to Lonestar's cover.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually own the album by Marc Cohen. *grins*

I actually chose the Lonestar version because the tone seemed to fit Charlie a little more than Marc's rendition.

*looks at list* Yeah, it is a little ecclectic on the mix front, but then I have a huge CD collection because I worked at Borders once upon a time. My collection goes from Back to Switchblade Symphony.

[identity profile] booster17.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow - just looking at those ones I did know and comparing them to the story and the characters was just plain scary at times.

Breakfast at Tiffany's and Wonderwall in particular struck strong chords with me.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2004-09-07 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. Breakfast at Tiffany's just strikes me as such a Robin-Faith song. I pretty gloomed onto Wonderwall because of the "Maybe you're going to be the one that saves me."

Heeeee! Although I admit part of me cracks up at the song because I heard the "lounge lizard" version while driving around in my car with a friend. Every once in awhile we'll just look at each other and sing, "Yer my Won-Der-Wall" and start laughing.

Glad you like the lyrics.

[identity profile] 4thdixiechick.livejournal.com 2004-09-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Woah!
I'm impressed by the song list. I'd buy that if it were available.
I don't think it's odd that you've picked themes for all the characters. Anything that helps you work with your muse is a good thing!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_finn_/ 2004-09-15 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah, one of my favourite songs...

And speaking of Oasis Here's a version of Wonderwall (And incidentally, Don't Look Back In Anger, and Whatever) you might not have heard of...

As for the REM songs, the 90's really was their incomprehensible decade, wasn't it? What's the Frequency Kenneth is a perfect song for Crazy!Willow
