Happy Birthday to Me! (I Now Own a Car...)

In the department of, "'Taint much, but it's paid for..."

I paid off my car today! I saw that I owed $600 on it, and then looked at the amount I had in my savings account and said, "Y'know what? Why don't I pay that puppy off 5 months early?"

So, as a birthday present to me, I will be receiving the title on my own car, which means it's MINE MINE MINE ALL MINE!

SUCK IT CHASE! YOU NO LONGER HAVE ANY POWER OVER MAH CAR!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

(Is it sad that paying off my car has me this excited? Probably...)

Now, all I have to do is go car-payment free for another 5 years and I will consider it money well-spent on a car.

(I can do it, too. Watch. I will drive that mother into the ground, as is traditional for the Marcs!Family wheresoever we may be and however high our salaries are...)

I'll be over here busy being smug. ----------> *smug*

Party time!

I OWN MY CAR SUCKA!

[identity profile] bastardsnow.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a nice feeling, isn't it? Good times, not having to make car payments.

[identity profile] married-n-mich.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah for you! And Happy Birthday :o)

I have like four months left on my car payments. The end is so near I can taste it!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
My birthday isn't until next month, but thank you. ♥

I've been throwing money into my savings all along. Sure, I've pulled out money to pay for "emergencies" or "treats" this year, but I was unexpectedly better than usual this year, so I decided to reward myself by paying my car off early.

YAY!

[identity profile] tnrkitect.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, in the not too distant future you will have a 13 year old vehicle that has been paid for for the last 8 years and is still running strong... oh wait, that's me.

Congrats! I remember what it was like when I finally no longer had that car payment. Next up is to zero out my credit cards and student loans. (baby steps, baby steps)

A have a nice little Saturn 2000 5-speed that gets 38 mph (there is nothing, I mean nothing automatic in the car).

Cheap to gas up, cheap to insure (who wants to steal a standard), and reasonable maintenance costs.

You will be prying it out of my cold, dead hands.

[identity profile] kokuten.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
if it only goes 38 mph, it must get great gas milage ; )

I've always liked the Saturns, they're.. elegant.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah! 38 mpg!

My fingers went trippy...

[identity profile] tnrkitect.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Mine's a 1995 Ford Ranger 4 cyl 5 Speed, and I still get 22 in the city and 27 on the highway (which is excellent for a truck).

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa! That is really good for a truck.

Still, half the secret is driving a standard rather than an automatic.

[identity profile] phyr-nyt.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
i can't wait until i pay off my car. it will also be driven into the ground. :3

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I love my car, so I don't mind driving it into the ground so much. ♥

Happy Birthday and Congrats on the car payoff! :)

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Birthday's next month, but I figured, "Hey! Early Birthday Present!"

Thank you!

MY CAR IS MINE CHASE! SUCK IT!

[identity profile] the-jackalope.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I'm jealous. I've got about 6 months on mine and I'm chomping at the bit to be rid of the payments. So no, being excited about this is totally reasonable.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been good about preserving my savings this year, so when I saw that I was out ahead (and with my Christmas shopping being 90% complete and all), I figured — YAY! PAYOFF THE CAR!

[identity profile] lizziebelle.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I did a little dance the day I got my car's title in the mail. It's such a good feeling. :)

[identity profile] szandara.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay car ownership! We buy cheap and used and run them into the ground (um, except when we run them into other cars and have to replace them, but that was only once and was NOT MY FAULT) and it makes way more sense than pouring money into a rapidly depreciating asset. Mine now has 150,000 miles on it--it only had 130,000 when I bought it.

[identity profile] a2zmom.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Good for you! I have the same attitude. My current car has 140,000 miles on it and I'm hoping to go for another 140,000. It's never needed major repair work, just brake work and the usual maintenance. It had a minor oil leak this past week, but 800 dollars took care of it plus new brake pads, spark plugs and an oil change.

[identity profile] vichan.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy birthday!

And yeah - I'm the same with cars. I mean, my car was flipping stolen out of my parking lot... and then apparently driven between two cement poles and taken off-roading, and I still drive that guy around. I dropped $1600 to get it drivable again (I made the mistake of having state minimum insurance at the time, so that came from my own funds). It looks like death, but it still got me from Cleveland to Chicago and back.

[identity profile] dawnmipb.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations!! I plan to do this myself in the next few months.

That is awesome.

Of course, this means you're partially personally responsible for the economic continuing meltdown, because you're not OMG buying/consuming/wasting!

[identity profile] moire2.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats!

[identity profile] spiralleds.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats. That's a great feeling.

[identity profile] semirose.livejournal.com 2008-11-14 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoo congrats! Hah I hear you about driving the car into the ground, mine's a '94 with 190K miles and I'm determined to make her last another few years. She will too, I have faith (and am really good about basic maintenance)

[identity profile] ponders-life.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations! I did the same thing with my Saturn (kept it for 12 years!). Then I took that monthly car payment amount and had it auto-transferred to my savings account. Then, when the Saturn died, I had enough saved to pay CASH for a new car two years ago.
*is smug, too* :)

[identity profile] lee-rowan.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
CONGRATULATIONS!

It's great, isn't it? I have an 8-year-old Caravan that takes E85--it's got 150K but as long as it can be fixed I want to wait for biodiesel. (We mostly use my partner's 14-year-old car for town driving--better mileage). I'd love to get a Smartcar for town, but ... not right now!

I didn't realize Saturns got that kind of mileage... makes me wish for stick-shift.

[identity profile] sam-arkand.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a couple of years to pay off my scooter. Luckily, I rigged a half-cash/half credit line deal. So, the title is MINE ALL MINE! And the interest rates aren't too horrible.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2008-11-15 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy Birthday!

And yay car!

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2008-11-16 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
YAY! for car ownership and no more payments!
I drive a 1995 Honda Civic, which I paid off in 4 years; so she has been all mine for 9 years. I intend to keep her going until the engine falls out, and then I'll just replace the engine. My last Honda was 15 years old when I traded her in for this one; the body was getting rusted out because I had to park outside. Now I have underground parking, this car will last forever, I hope!
