liz_marcs: Jeff and Annie in Trobed's bathroom during Remedial Chaos Theory (Red_Dwarf_Fandom_Summary)

Before There Was Red Dwarf...There Was Quark...

Okay, if the release of this bit of awesome doesn't make you jump up and down with glee...

Then you're a hell of a lot younger than me.

Quark, which ran on NBC for a mere 8 episodes back in the 1978, was created by Buck Henry, the same crazy genius who gave us Get Smart.

Even though Quark ran exactly once on NBC, the impression it left was so indelible that for years sci-fi fans would quote lines at each other even though it was never seen on primetime network television again.

Sometime during 1990, Quark was re-run exactly once on the HA! comedy cable network (it, along with the Comedy Channel, merged to form what is known today as Comedy Central). Some lucky, lucky fans managed to videotape the singular run and for years poor quality, 10th generation videos were sold and traded on the fandom blackmarket.

And now it's coming on DVD!!!!!

I. Am. So. Excited.

Did I mention that I already put in my pre-order? I sure have.

Did I also mention that it's shipping in a little over a week?

IT IS!

OMIGAWD IM GONNA HAVE A CRYSTAL CLEAR COPY OF QUARK IN MY HOT LITTLE HANDS IN LESS THAN A WEEK AND I CAN FINALLY TOSS MY CRAPPY TENTH GENERATION VHS TAPE THAT I HAVE WATCHED WITHIN AN INCH OF ITS LIFE IN EXCHANGE FOR A CRISP, CLEAN DVD COPY OF QUARK!!!!!!!!

*gasp gasp gasp gasp*

okay maybe i'm a lot excited right now...shut up!

...is that TIM THOMERSON as a split-personality hermaphrodite?

Must. Have. Now.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods nods nods*

IT IS INDEED-Y!

The really funny thing is that in the pilot, they had him doing both the male and female voice (He actually did a good job with the female voice.)

I guess Standards and Practices at NBC was so allergic to the very idea of teh ghey (remember...this was 1978) that they they forced the series to dub in an actual female voice in the remaining 7 episodes whenever he'd switch over to Jean from Gene.

Now, here's the hilarious part...Tim Thomerson played Jean as completely swishy...as in drag queen swishy.

*falls over laughing*

So there's NBC doing everything it can to somehow put some distance between "science fiction split-personality hermaphrodite" and "bi-sexual man with drag queen tendencies" by dubbing in a female voice for Jean, but the actor manages to blow the scheme completely out of the water by actually acting.

Man, I only know Thomerson from his tough-guy thing in a variety of Full Moon sci-fi action movies like Trancers and Dollman.

That's just... weird. Also, pre-ordered.

Didn't Comedy Central form in '90 or '91 at the latest? I remember watching MST3K in college by '91 at the latest.

And I was probably not yet seven when Quark aired....I don't think I remember it. I hope it's aged well over the decades?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunh, so it did.

That so that means HA! existed for exactly 1 year.

Wow.

As for aging well, it's very much a 1970s show. It looks it. It feels it. On the upside, the jokes have aged pretty well, I think.

... and there was much rejoicing!

I remember watching Quark, and loving it, but not enough to be able to quote anything from it1.

I guess I'm starting my Christmas list now!

1I counter the loss of nerd points by mentioning my age, but some people don't buy it.

I'm like, "Screw the Christmas list. Must have now!"

And to be fair, I did have that 10th generation VHS tape that I've watched into oblivion.

"Bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee, bee!!!!!!!"

OMG! Quark! The Bettys arguing over which was the clone! Gene/Jean! Ficus!

[identity profile] animeagan.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)

It's funny because though I was a mere baby-toddler when this came out, I do remember catching it once. I remember seeing The Head and being oddly confused, fairly amused, and slightly disturbed.

lmfao. As soon as I saw the pictures on the Amazon page tiny flecks of memories came back to me.

I think this would be worth watching again, most defs.

Holy. Crap. I remember this. They're dragging everything out and putting it on DVD.

Never heard of it until now (baby), but based on your reaction I will definitely watch it. Added to netflix queue. Thanks for mentioning it! I do love finding awesome new stuff.

OMG! Yes! Thank you for letting me know. I simply adored this show when it was on -- and the first time I heard Quark's name on DS9, I immediately flashed back to this.

::runs off to Amazon::

Whee! That was yet another show that I loved that died an early death. I may be forced to invest!
