Pinged by spam journals

Sorry for the disappearing act yesterday.

I am having a meeting-licious week, which apparently includes surprise meetings that spring up 15 minutes before I'm due to run into them.

No, I'm not in trouble. Just hopping busy.

Anyway, FYI, over the past 24 hours I've ended up banning what appears to be 8 12 18 20 "spam journals" that have left nonsense replies to some old posts from roughly a year ago.

Side note: Suddenly, I'm really, really, really glad that I've banned anonymous commenting. I shudder to think just how bad this could be if it was still allowed.

Anyway, I'm dealing with the spam journals as they pop up. While I'm very sure I haven't banned any real people, if you are a real person and have found yourself banned from commenting, ping me and I'll unban you.

I might look at your user name funny considering the weirdness of some of the spamming, but I will unban you.

ETA:
It should be noted that the comments the spam journals leave behind are odd, but not necessarily anything that stands out as particularly inappropriate.

It isn't until you check the journals themselves that the wrongness comes into play. All of the spam journals have no "friends," and consist of a single post that, on the surface, seems to be talking about health care or the economy. However, if you try to read that post you realize that it's complete gibebrish.

Also, this single post seems to have the same set of tags at the end of the single post. Almost all tags are sexually explicit in nature, with a particular focus on either gay sex or underage sex.

Just FYI...

ETA2:
By request, I'm providing 17 out of 20 of the banned journals. Amazingly enough, 3 of the journals I've banned and reported as spam journals have already been suspended, so there's no point in presenting them here.

Here be my blacklist so you can preemptively ban the little darlings for yourselves:

ETA3:
I've been reliably informed by [livejournal.com profile] kokuten that the the words that look like LJ tags at the bottom of the single post are actually off-site links.

Checking to see if I can get through.

I can't remember which group or user inspired me to look over your profile, but there were added mutual interests,....

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hullo! *waves*

As you can tell, I'm pretty suck-tastic at administering this LJ. Heee!

But, seriously, I recognize your name from seeing you comment and I'm pretty sure we're on some similar comms, too.

I added an ETA to explain the form these spam journals take, so you're definitely safe. :-)

[identity profile] sunfell.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you care to list them so we can also pre-emptively ban them?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Done and done.

Come on back to check out the list. Three of the journals I reported as spam journals have already been deleted.

There are still 15 for you to ban, though.

[identity profile] sunfell.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure wish there was a way to do a mass-banning- I had to do every one of them individually. But, they're banned.

And they do have some rather nasty links, don't they?

And like another poster said, what's the point? I'm glad that I do not permit anonymous posts or posts from non-members on my journal, either. After some early encounters with some really creepy replies, I made sure that was done.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Two more have been added since they came in within the past hour:

[livejournal.com profile] paulaqiguz
[livejournal.com profile] zsuzannapivyx

Ironically enough, they came in just as someone on my FList[livejournal.com profile] insomnia named these two as spam journals that had hit him

You can!

Go to the admin console: http://www.livejournal.com/admin/console

Enter the following in the text box:

ban_set name1
ban_set name2
ban_set name3

etc., each on a separate line.

Then hit execute, and voila.

I and several people on my flist had a problem with that not long ago. I ended up sending a list of all the journals to LJ via a support ticket so they could suspend the accounts.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooo, good idea.

I've also edited my entry to include the LJ list so you can preemptively ban the accounts for yourself.

If you want an idea how bad the problem is? Just go to the LJ Dashboard and check out the newest posts. Nothing but spam spam spam, a good deal of it porn. Think this was the image LJ was looking for?

[identity profile] kokuten.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
that seems to be a VERY roundabout and needlessly complex way to get your spam/porn links out..

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It does seem to be an odd way of going about it.

I'm not entirely sure what it was about their comments (aside from the fact they all appeared on some old journals) that pinged my radar hard enough that I decided to check on their profiles.

Seriously, though. I'm not sure where I get the purpose, because there are actually no links at all with the spam journals. I'm somewhat at a loss.

[identity profile] kokuten.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
tons of links. What you identified as 'tags' on the bottom of the nonsense posts are just plain old links to various shady sites. Most likely malware distribution hubs..

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhhhh. Thank you.

[identity profile] nebris.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I did get some interesting Pron Spam Poetry (http://nebris.livejournal.com/3127710.html) in my e-mail yesterday. =)

~M~

..I get one of the bot LJ's every six weeks or so..

I got hit by a couple about a year ago and then it stopped.

Over the past 24 hours, I've been getting pinged like crazy.

[identity profile] ffutures.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have comment notification turned on - I just look back down the current page every day and check if there seem to be new comments on the posts that are visible. Is there any easy way to spot this sort of thing appearing short of using comment notifications?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Go to this link: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/recent_comments.bml

It'll show all your recent comments, as well as the most recent comments you've made.

There's an option that'll show you up to 100 of the most recent comments either way.

In fact, using this tool is how I spotted the weird pattern.

[identity profile] ffutures.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Many thanks!

[identity profile] jgracio.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably an attempt at Google bombing, having their sites appear earlier in a search.

[identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was somewhat confused to the spam in response to a comment I made regarding strikethrough 2007 links last year. O_o

[identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
to = by *facepalm*

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That was one of the spam comments I reported, deleted, and the banned the user.

[identity profile] imaginarycircus.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, with my stunning powers of communication I was trying to express my confusion and then irritation with the spam. I didn't do too hot. Can I blame Harvard for sending men with drills to wake me up every morning this week?

[identity profile] annearchy.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ummm...thanks... I banned these folks preemptively. Sort of like an email condom? :)

[identity profile] ljmouse.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Spambot. It's all automated. Destroy one, the bot will make fifty more.

Livejournal's infrastructure is such as to almost encourage this sort of nonsense. (And don't even get me started on their site-wide feeds for ALL content.) I suspect the reason Livejournal doesn't have more spam is that Myspace and Facebook are bigger targets.

[identity profile] silly-dan.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"kaileyfaxyp" was reported elsewhere on my flist.

[identity profile] lilacsigil.livejournal.com 2008-07-18 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome! Thanks for providing this list.

As annoying as those are...

I'm not sure they're violating the TOS.

Posting gibberish & a link farm isn't against the TOS, and while there's a rule against commercial activity, that's never been interpreted as "post links to sites with paid membership/services." Posting a random, off-topic comment in someone's journal is also not against the TOS.

Maybe they're counting the links as "posting a link to content that can't be hosted on LJ?"

I assume there are, and will be, more of them, because there's no way to phrase a TOS that doesn't allow them, but does allow random newbies with limited interests. (I note that invite codes would keep them entirely out.)

I have anon comments screened, not blocked. Haven't gotten any. But I also have no recent journal entries; maybe that makes a difference? Or maybe it's because my journal's bot-blocked?

[identity profile] dear-sweet-lana.livejournal.com 2008-07-21 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
LJ is probably happy to have them. Judging by the link to "most recent posts" above, it's these spam-socks that are keeping the "posts within the past 24 hours" number on the LJ front page up so high.
