D'oh!

I don't know why, but I would've bet my soul on the fact that Everybody's Talkin' from the movie Midnight Cowboy was sung by Glenn Campbell.

It's not. It's sung by Harry Nilsson.

Wow. Talk about pegging the wrong singer for this one. We're talking years of being wrong.

If you're still unsure about what song I'm talking about, here's the video from YouTube:

I would have bet Joe South and been just as wrong for just as long.

Heee! I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Nilsson also is responsible for that horrific "Without You" song ("AAAAAAllllll by myyyyyyyself!")

I was just going to say 'But that line isn't in 'Without You', it's a different song - but I see Julia has already pointed it out! 'Without You' has 'Can't live, if living is without you' in the chorus.

Oddly enough I did know that Nilsson sang Everybody's Talkin' in Midnight Cowboy too.

I was just going to say I had a boyfriend who was a fan - but actually that's not true - he was a friend of Harry Chapin. So I happily mix American singers of the sixties and seventies up too!

And it was written by Fred Neil, whose version beats Harry Nilsson's with a gnarled root.

Harry Nilsson is just, *gah!* Kill me now.

Oh, and I realized I never friended you back (sorry). I kept meaning to, so I just did.

The critical questions are these:

Is Nillson Schmillson on CD?

And, more importantly, is The Point! on dvd?

As far as I can remember, George Harrison owned the rights for both, and releases got borked when he died.

"All By Myself" is a different song than "Without You" and was written and sung by that one hit wonder Eric Carmen. "Without You" starts "Oh I can't forget the feeling nor your face when you were leaving 'cause I had you there and then I let you go" and was a ballad cover of a much more rock and roll Badfinger song.

I'm showing my age again; I was a Freshman in college when The Point! aired for the first time, and I mostly followed Nilsson through his connection with the Beatles.

Julia, thanks for the link, I'd never seen that performance.

Yes.

And, more importantly, is The Point! on dvd?
Yes.

Amazon will hear from me next paycheck, then!

Julia, think I'll give "The Point" to the college-aged offspring for Valentine's Day, as they've been deprived of it so far.

I thought it was Glen Campbell for years and years, and only found out relatively recently that I was wrong, too.

I didn't know that the same dude was responsible for that horrible "All By Myself" song, though. Man, there was some truly awful music in the 'seventies!

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
He wasn't responsible for 'All by Myself' - that was Eric Carmen - honestly!

[identity profile] lizziebelle.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, right! How could I forget? *g*

[identity profile] kurukami.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Should I be embarassed to admit I've never seen Midnight Cowboy? *grin*

I missed that question on last night's Jeopardy too. :)

I *like* Harry Nilsson! Glenn Campbell did the truly awful "Rhinestone Cowboy," that's probably what stuck in your confused memory.

That is one of my LPs that I should either rip and burn to CD or simply purchase it.

Nillson has a remarkably distinctive voice with a lot of sawtooth waves in it.

Your brain isn’t melting; Glen Campbell actually did a version of this, must have been close to forty years ago. I remember hearing it, though I can’t recall on which album, and you can find a snippet posted at http://ilovemusic259.imeem.com/music/v-e72mar/glen_campbell_everybodys_talking/.

A lot of Nilsson's output (both as singer and songwriter) is quite amazing, like "Gotta Get Up" and "Jump into the Fire" and "Don't Forget Me"...
