Fandom Mash-Ups from You Tube

So here I am, de-pollinating my apartment and I stupidly decide to take a brain-break.
(Have I mentioned that everything is a fuzzy green? 'Cause it is, it really, really is.)
Anyway, I have a weakness for mash-ups. A serious weakness. I really, really love mash-ups in which the opening credits of one television series is imposed on the other. The more outlandish, the better.
This unholy love was started when I caught a Firefly/The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. trade-off. I've been hooked every since.
All embedded videos under the cut.
The video quality isn't the best, and the vidder had to trim The Adventures Brisco County Jr. theme song a little bit to make it fit, but this works surprisingly well as the Firefly theme. The general western feel of the orchestral opening certainly fits the spirit, if nothing else.
Well, naturally, you only have to wonder what would happen if you gave The Adventures Brisco County Jr. the Firefly theme song, right? The opening credits for The Adventures Brisco County Jr. had to be trimmed to fit the much, much shorter theme song, but again it's a pretty good fit. Again, video quality is a little iffy, but it's fun to look at.
Whee! That was fun. But, wait! There's more!
Now this is a very handsome-looking set of alternate credits indeed. The vidder pulled some very nice clips from various Battlestar Galactica episodes and matched them up to the Firefly theme song. End result? It sure could pass as legit.
This is another case of the Firefly theme song imposed on Battlestar Galactica. It's a nice little set of alterna-credits, but not as good as the video above.
Of course, the collection wouldn't be complete without something totally cracktastic, right? How about The Office switching themes with Battlestar Galactica?
This...should not work nearly as well as it does. What's really terrifying is that with the right clips and the right editing, the theme from The Office is practically a lock for that smash-hit comedy Battlestar Galactica that exists somewhere in an alternate universe.
Meanwhile, in that same universe, that hit drama on a tiny cable channel, The Office, is getting critical raves. This one is a tougher fit, but in the end works thanks to some clever editing. Oh, and it did kind of make me laugh.
You know, I remember seeing the original U.K. version of The Office on one of my local PBS stations. It's the original series that scared me away from watching the U.S. version until I decided to try it through the magic of Netflix.
Someone decided to impose the U.K. theme on the U.S. opening credits.
No matter how you slice it, this looks like a completely different show with the U.K. theme, even though there's very little by way of editing the U.S. credits, at least from what I can see.
If that wasn't exciting enough for you, you can always check out Jack Bauer's day at The Office.
This one is The Office theme posed on 24. This works surprisingly well, too. I wonder if it's some kind of bouncy magic that's specific to The Office theme.
Well, now we're going to randomly swing in another direction. This time, it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer's theme imposed on poor, ol' Battlestar Galactica
The cuts are just a little too frenetic to make the Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme work with the altered Battlestar Galactica credits. I think a slightly better vidder could've done a bang-up job. If nothing else, this is a really good proof-of-concept.
Of course, no mash-up would be complete without the opening credits of Buffy set to...One Day at a Time?!?
This is another one that shouldn't fit. Once you get over the shock of hearing 1970s retro-pastiche over the credits, it, unh, really does kind of work. Visuals are from the opening credits of Buffy S5.
Yeah, that was indeed cracktastic, wasn't it? Guess what! I found something else that's gonna really break your brain.
When I first saw this, I actually did a headtilt. Twenty minutes later, it hit my funny bone and I haven't stopped giggling. Okay, maybe I'm weak like veal, but I can't help it. I think slapping The Facts of Life over the Buffy S7 credits is funny as all hell.
Now that we've all had our brains broken, how about seeing what would happen if Battlestar Galactica had to carry the theme from Stargate: SG-1.
I wasn't a huge fan of this one. Then I saw the very, very end and suddenly it worked! Naturally, the opening credits for Battlestar had to be re-edited to make it work with the SG-1 theme, so don't expect a miracle here.
You know, you just know that someone had to use the theme song from the original Battlestar Galactica for the new one, right? Would you be shocked if I told you that it was frakking amazing?
What's truly impressive about this video is that the vidder went all out. They didn't just throw the old 1978 theme song on top of a bunch of the new series' clips. Oh, no. They edited the footage so that it has the exact feel of the original series. Obviously, they're not exactly the same (the headshots are missing with the credits, for a start), the the feel of it...man, I had flashbacks. For reals.
The only fault I can find is they had to re-loop the closing bars to fit everything in, but it's such a minor, minor thing that I can easily forgive.
And now for something completely different...
Fans of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine know that the theme song for that series changed at the start of the Dominion War arc that lasted through several seasons. What if it was the Battlestar Galactica theme that was imposed on Deep Space Nine?
Prepare to have your jaw drop.
This video left me speechless. Truly. Obviously, new cuts were chosen from across the Dominion War arc to fit the Battlestar Galactica theme, but this was...guh! Fantastic job! This so could've worked.
Th-th-th-that's all folks!

That is amazing stuff, thanks for the links.
I feel that once i get a proper internet connection i am going to spend several life times on You Tube.
that and re watching the later DS9 (and actually watching S7)

I think the series really finds its feet in mid-S2. Some people argue that it's S3. Either way, there's a lot of set up for the Dominion War and it actually lasts from mid-S3 through the end of the show in S7. IMHO, it's the best of the post-TOS Star Treks.

I am seriously tempted by DS9 though. i rememebr how bad S1 was, though it is less cringe inducing than S1 Voy and TNG. and while it got better with the dominion war and all that, i never saw the end of it because i was away at college, and the old group was all doing different things.
oh how things change.

The set-up for the Dominion also started somewhere in S1, too, which also surprised the heck out of me.
Then again, the DS9 writers decided that their competition wasn't the other Star Treks, but Babylon 5, so it's not really surprising in a way. I think Ron Moore transfered over from Next Gen to DS9 in S3, so he's pretty much the reason why Worf ended up on DS9 and why the Klingons had such a huge role in the series in later years. He was a total Klingon fanboy (a think a lot of the new stuff we learned about Klingons in TNG and DS9 were due to him — like their system of government, mating rituals, and religion) and somehow ended up being the in-house "Klingon expert" for Star Trek until he was fired from Voyager.
What's funny is that a lot of the stuff you see on BSG is the same stuff he wanted to do on Voyager. It's the reason why he was fired. Heh.

(Though the second-last one really needed the Patrick Macnee voiceover.)

Yes! Those little red bars really crack me up. You see it for maybe a second, but once you do it's one heck of a visual joke.

My favourite, I think, is the DS9 with BSG theme. That really, really works. (and makes me so want the DS9 DVDs..)
Thanks for the entertainment, Liz!

To prove this, I think you need to do a mashup of the BSG themesong w/ the Carnivale credits ;) LOL. Or Life on Mars. :)

I did a search for Carnivale and Battlestar on YouTube. No joy.
But glad you liked the BSG theme on The Office. Those pound-y drums make just about anything work.

Mash-ups is actually a musical term (think of it as fanfic for music). You'd take one song and use it as a backbone. Then, you edit samples of other songs into that backbone song. The end result is song that's completely different from the original. The problem with mash-ups is that they're illegal, which is why they're not not all over the radio. You either have to go into the clubs and hear it live, or you have to get it from the Internet.
How illegal are they? A bunch of mash-up artists decided to remake Green Day's American Idiot CD and released it on the Internet as American Edit. Now, Green Day itself heard American Edit and, according to Billy Joe Armstrong, they liked what they heard. However, they don't get a say in okaying the use of American Idiot in a mash-up. Their record company, despite the fact that Green Day said they liked the mash-up of their CD and had no problem with it being used that way, squashed it using a C&D, and the whole thing had to go underground (or as underground online as you can get if you're Google-fu is strong).
I have links to the American Edit album. I think those download links are still live, although the American Idiot download links are dead since they've expired. Here's the link on my LJ that'll get you to the American Edit mash-up: http://liz-marcs.livejournal.com/184684.html
That said, some artists (rap artists especially) have started releasing "street tapes" (i.e., CDs that are sold out of the trunk of someone's car at concerts) that are mash-up ready where the vocals and accompanying music are on separate tracks. Jay-Z did this, and someone put out a whole CD where Jay-Z was mashed-up with various Weezer tunes (that one is surprisingly good).
Another famous mash-up is The Grey Album by Dangermouse, which is a mash-up of the Beatles' White Album with various rap artists. Night at Hip-Hop Hopera by the Kleptones, which mashes up Queen's Night at the Opera with various rap artists and ambient noise is another high-profile mash-up and probably one of the earlier ones.
Party Ben, one of the best mash-up artists out there is constantly creating new mash-ups from different songs. (His download page is here: http://partyben.com/downloads/)
The musical form itself is highly addictive. The good stuff is really good. The stuff that's not so good is really, really just noise. Just like fanfic, really.

How shocked would you have been to hear one of those comedy theme songs over those credits, and then saw the show itself? Talk about your false advertising, hunh?

What's funny is, the Brisco County theme song ended up being reused ABC's Olympic theme song. It worked really well there, too.

The Buffy ones are just soooooo wrong...and yet so funny :) One Day at a Time just shouldn't work that well, lol.

BSG seems to be a fave for trying different themes on the opening credits. Like everything else, a lot of them try to hard, but the ones I found were the ones I really liked.

Btw, have ye any interest in the nBSG/ST:TNG crossover on the Pit of Voles, in which Gaeta is actually a Federation officer who got lost way out in the deep, deep space and couldn't get back? And has been subtly correcting Galactica's course for 4 years? (this is set Pre-Lay Down Your Burdens)

Also, I followed the link you gave someone above, and just dl'ed American Edit. I am blown away! I had heard the term mash-up, but being chronically under a rock and in a cave, I didn't know what they were. So far, I am hooked, at least on Dean Gray. :-) I'm friending you, if you don't mind because I would like to be sure to see your posts on this kind of thing. Thanks!

OTOH you owe me half a Diet Squirt, from the spit take I just did for the BSG/Office mash-up.
And on the music side, I highly recommend Dean Gray American Edit too. It's my favorite, and I end up playin... I mean hearing it from friends cause I would never have such things ... more often than the original American Idiot.
