For some of us, it's about getting somewhere with a project that has a beginning, middle and end. I spend a lot of time writing myself, but it's mostly somatic/bodywork related, a lot of blog postings, and e-mails. Last year I faded in NaNoWriMo at around 10k words, but this year I'm going to make sure I hit the 50k. I usually jump between too many projects, so I'm making sure to focus on just writing an hour a day for this (about 1500-2000 words).
When I used to write IT/computing courseware, I ended up writing about 50k words in a week when in crunch time to supply something for a client. I'm glad I'm not doing that any more.
