Hmmmmm...New HP is a go...

People on my FList might be interested to know:

The Harry Potter and the Gobblet of Fire movie is now a go.

New director: Mike Newell, who gave us both Four Weddings and a Funeral and Donnie Darko.

Given that I'm wondering how in hell they're going to adopt Book 4? I'm now wondering even more.

There's some courting to get Ralph Fiennes to play Voledmont, but there's some hesitation on Fiennes's part because he's not sure he wants to commit to the whole series.

Other new faces:

Brendan Gleeson for Mad-Eye Moody
Robert Pattinson for Cedric Diggory
Stanislav Ianevski for Viktor Crumb
Clemence Poesy for Fleur Delacour
Katie Leung for Cho Chang
Francese De La Tour for Madame Maxime

There are no changes in the existing cast.

Looks like they're not going to split Book 4 into two movies. *scratches head* They're going to have to drop quite a lot from the book to make this movie work. Hermione's campaign to free the house elves is probably for the chop, as well as the World Quiddich Tournament at the beginning of the book.

Hmmmm....still interesting news...

I have resigned myself to the loss of the Quidditch tournament already. I think I'm okay with it. I do think there might be an abbreviated tournament scene, if only to get the dark mark think introduced.

As for S.P.E.W., I would love if they took that out, but I think they'll leave part or most of it in, because of the importance of Kreacher in the fifth book.

I am surpried that the kids are still being used, they are rapidly aging.

I'm very surprised that you say it won't be a two-parter, my niece's fiancee does work for the film company and seems to be reasonably sure that it will be.

I read - I think in Entertainment Weekly - that one of Cuaron's contributions was to convince everyone not to split the movie into two parts. Up until that point, I believe a two-parter was the plan.

Actually, Mike Newell directed Donnie Brasco, not Donnie Darko.

But they're both good movies starring total hotties, so same diff. :)

Ooooh thanks for the info!

Maybe they'll extend the movie time *crosses fingers*, I love the movies but I just wish they didn't have to drop so much.

I read on IMDB a little while ago that they were getting John Malkovitch to play Voldemort, but they've screwed up their reporting before -- at one point, they said Rowan Atkinson was going to play Voldemort.

Early interviews with Mike Newell said that it was only going to be one film, not two. It was posted a while ago but The Leaky Cauldron (http://the-leaky-cauldron.org/) should have it archived somewhere.

As far as what will be cut, I suspect that Newell, like Cuaron, will keep only what is essential to the plot, which makes me happy that we will be seeing the Quidditch Cup as it is an important part in setting up the rest of the story.

Speaking of which, if you don't already know J.K. Rowlings Official Site, in which she has actually set up and posts on with little clues, questions and comments about the upcoming books is such a treat. She has also released the title of Book 6 but I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

Hint: There is a door with a Do Not Disturb Sign on it and behind it is a brick wall. Every so often between now and when she release the books, JK will allow you to move the bricks for clues to the new story. Her first tidbit was that the title of the book refers to neither Harry nor Voldemort.

I've resigned myself to the fact I don't think any of the movies from this point on will be in any faithful to the actual plot. It will be too hard. I can't even begin to imagine how they'll get all the info in one movie from the 4th book. Probably there'll only be one challange for the tournement, or something.

Rowan Atkinson as Voledmort? That'd be weird.

Oh - I thought of you this morning, because the Hyena episode of Buffy was on. It is very Xander-centric, and I found it interesting (and may have said this before) that he quite naturally became the alpha male of that group. I'm sure that was simply because he was a main character, but I think it fits in with Xander's character well.
