Soliciting Ideas for a Dark Xander Fic-A-Thon

I've been mulling since before WriterCon about doing this because Dark Xander fics are kind of a hardcore kink of mine. The problem is, there doesn't seem to be a lot of them around these days, unless it's the hardcore Master!Slave fics which, to be honest, squick me out bigtime.

But I miss the old-fashioned Xander's gone "evil/dark/has been led astray/is in a bad place" stories that used to be so much fun to find. I miss some of the interesting twists that used to occur in some of those stories where what you saw was not always what you got when you came up against the closing paragraph.

Plus, with the oppressive heat...and the fact that I need to be pulled out of my foul mood...I've decided to hold a Dark Xander Fic-A-Thon.

So, I've got a vague idea of what I want to do for this, but I'm throwing out some choices to whomever wants to participate.

I'm throwing it open to het, slash, and gen. All pairings or non-pairings are welcome. All stories have to be clearly marked either way (I don't care if it's het, slash, or gen — mark it as such because fair is fair). All genres (AU, all-human, canon, historical fic, crack!fic, humor, etc.) are also welcome.

Obviously, the only rules I've got are clear labeling, clear warnings, and no exploitative Master!Slave fics in which Xander is the master of a canon character or is the slave of a canon character.

I understand that there might be some grey area on the master!slave bit (for example, Xander is under Dru's thrall...or has found a way to control Dru, which isn't quite the same thing that I'm talking about) so if you take it to private email to discuss it with me, I'm willing to be flexible to a certain extent on this.

Other than that, fill out the survey below. I want this to be as much fun as possible for the broadest array of people, so I want the "rules" (such as they are) to be as inclusive as possible.

Also, don't forget to comment if you've got something to say.

[Poll #783646]

I filled out the poll even though I have no idea if I'd actually participate or not (due to scheduling, not desire.)

No worries. If you can, you can. If you can't, enjoy the bounty!

Looks like people are leaning more towards the "open-ended" version of a fic-a-thon where you just show up to play if you want to or have the time. So if you can manage it, you can just show up at the last minute with a drabble if you want.

I just want people to have fun with it and come play in the big ol' sandbox with all their favorite tools or just to kick back and read the stories. There's totally no pressure or stress. :-)

[identity profile] wesleysgirl.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn because I like both the open ended versions and the assigned versions. But it can be less stressful to just write whatever comes to mind rather than trying to force your mind into coming up with something that fits a request, and low-stress is good in my book at the moment. :-)

Not sure I was much help. I like all those options for "dark".

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
So do I, actually. :-)

But I also understand that different people have an idea of what's a Dark Xander vs. an Evil Xander and see a big difference between the two (for example). I'm not planning to close the poll until the weekend, so we'll see how the votes come out.

Can I sign up yesterday? :D

...pretty much the only thing I'd point out that isn't covered on the poll is to leave the categorization open to multiple-choice ships -- some of my favorite fics are het/slash/gen amalgamations.

Oh, and I didn't tick the "no character bashing" box because that seems awfully hard to enforce. I wouldn't want to see it, but I don't know how you'd keep it out.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I view it as threesomes and moresomes are understood to be welcome, provided they're marked like all the other categories. I'll be sure to make it explicit when I pull together the sekrit rools.

I don't have a problem with characters looking bad, provided their bad acts/actions are understandable within the context of the story. Bashing would be making characters look bad for the sake of looking bad.

But you're right. That may be tough to enforce. Or I'll have to spell it out in the sekrit rools.

I'm all over this, despite having written so little Xander in the past. It sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. : )

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Heee! Dark Xanders are the shit! No, seriously. Good Dark Xanders are worth their wait in gold.

I'm hoping that it'll be fun for everyone to try their hand at it and see what they come up with.

I filled out the poll, even though, having only made it through season 5 so far, I wouldn't participate. There's also the thing about me not writing fanfic, since, for reasons unknown, I don't enjoy writing much and I'm terrible at it.

But I love to read, so I polled away.

Anyway -

Other scenarios: I'm a big fan of the fundamentalist character idea. Which is, basically, that you take a character and give them an obsession - a good obsession. And then watch it twist, as all obsessions do. Its not Evil, because the character thinks he is doing good... but its all horribly awry.

What type of Fic-A-Thon? Have you thought about letting people choose their own stories, but announcing their themes/scenarios on a first come/first serve basis, to maintain variety?

I ticked no character bashing on the assumption that character bashing means taking a character and making them act out of character because you don't like them. I have no problem killing character, destroying them, putting them into terrible lights - provided its in character. Really, I think the only way to bash a character is to take them out of that character. (Which, I might add, is different from twisting them).

Err... I mean I don't enjoy writing fanfic much... I like writing other stuffs... yeah.

[identity profile] othercat.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
What's the word limit? 1000 words or higher?

[identity profile] tjalorak.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I got distracted by the ticky boxes and radial options... I wouldn't write (I basically never write anymore -.-;), but I'd love to read what others post up. =P

[identity profile] jpublic.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be honest - I'd probably do something shortish on this. Maybe a collection of scenes.

[identity profile] pinkdormouse.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Xander's one of those characters I can't write for some reason, and definitely not as a main character. And anyway I've got a novel synopsis to write polish and start sending out. But I'll read what other people come up with, and you never know I may suddenly get inspired.

[identity profile] booster17.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've been kicking around the idea of a Dark!Xander/SG-1 crossover where he kidnaps Dawn now for quite a while. This might well be the kick I need to get started actually writing it.

Either that, or one of the sequels to Sleeper.

there is a first time for everything

I have never written any fan fiction before, but i am an avid reader (especially of one Liz Marcs)

I was just wondering as the virgin writer if it would be acceptable for me to throw in my hat (cause me love some evil/anti-hero Xander)

also, if said writing is acceptable would anyone be interested in being a beta for a first-timer who needs lots and lots of grammer help

never the less I am excited to read all the fics

thanks
good luck and good journey

I chose "ticky box!" on the first one because, well, there's not really a time that would be good for me to write, but I would really like to. And that wasn't an option. =)

One of my favorite things about Xander is that, to me, he has the most moral leeway of the BtVS characters. And I don't mean so much about going evil, the way that Willow did, but rather in the Machavellian sense. In the same way that Giles was willing to kill Ben to ensure that Glory didn't return, I think Xander would be willing to damn himself if he thought it was necessary, or if he lost hope enough and just wanted to do as much damage as he could.

When you speak of a dark Xander story, however... do you include a possibility of redemption (or, rather, the possibility of him turning from the dark path at the end, even if it's in a Vader-esque, right-before-death sense) or is it just, he's dark, and that's that?

Other idea

What about a story where Xander is infected with/by something that completely skews his perseption of good and bad. Before he would never think of hurting any of his girls but after he has no problem knocking them out and chaining them up to keep them safe.

Not necessarily Evil Xand since he isn't himself but could be argued either way.

PS I couldn't figure out how to answer your poll. Is it because I don't have a LJ?

I've been working on a "Xander turns evil" challenge-fic for [livejournal.com profile] ludditerobot for, oh, well over a year now. I'll try and finish it up for your fic-a-thon.

[identity profile] texanfan.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love to participate but all I have is scattered thoughts right now. If I think of something and have the time I'll contribute. Regardless, I plan to read avidly!

((From : Senior Tact))

Long time listener, first time caller...Um...Er...

Sounds like a lot of fun. Evil computer willing, I'm in.

Just tell me where to go and what to do and I'm all yours (Oooo, that sounded so much better in my head.)

I've had a story in mind for the last month, but 'Bob the Evil Box of Doom', my computer, died a horrible death. With luck I can get the beast up and running in time to help with the brain rotting

A Liz_marcs ficathon...dark Xander...oh I'm so in! (but not for Sept please!!!)
