Music from the Cube: What Am I Listening to Today?

Drat. So much for leaving work on time today. *rrrrrrr*

Tight deadlines suck. A "prefect" Friday for my "perfect" work week.

It's been a Pixies sort of week, as in I've had Wave of Mutiliation on repeat play all. week. long.

Sometimes you just need Pixies. And Dropkick Murphys. And The Ramones.

I think you know what I'm getting at here.

So, to show my love, I will share my mood with the rest of you in the form of MP3 downloads.

Pixies, Best of the Pixies: Wave of Mutiliation Rating=$$$$$
[Support the Artist]
How I Got This CD: Bought used from somewhere. I forget where.

The Pixies hail from my backyard and from the time when alt-rock was, y'know, really alt. They hail from a time when I lived and died by WFNX because everyone knew that WAAF was for Zepplin-lovin', Stone-worshippin', metal-listenin', head-bangin' immature little boys taken in by the rock-n-roll hype, man. WFNX was where the real musical rebels were and what the real musical rebels were listening to, baby!

*ahem*

Yes, well. We all marched to the beat of our own drummer in unison. What can I say.

Anyhoo, since I was a broke little girl when the Pixies were "the thing" on the local circuit in Boston (and reaching for, but not quite accomplishing the heady heights of serious pop-stardom), most of my Pixies love had to be relegated to the radio. I only own one CD of theirs and it was something I had bought used at some point. Why I don't have more? I can't even explain why. I've gone out and started rebuilding my Ramones collection. I've started rebuilding my Dropkick Murphys collection. I've also snagged some other punk and and alt bands along the way in my quest for replacing the long-gone scratch-y casette tapes (or my faulty memory of WFNX from its hey-day). Yet somehow, I always forget to include the Pixies on my "must get" list.

Hunh. I admit that is a surprise.

Anyway, it's soooooo hard to choose only thee songs from this CD since these are the biggest and best tunes from the Pixies. There isn't a dud track on the entire CD. Some of you who aren't used to the musical discordance of the Pixies, mishmash of musical styles, or the band's rather unique sound might have a difficult time time warming up to the tunes. But I guarantee you, at some point you'll suddenly realize that you're chanting the Pixies' nearly insanely impenetrable lyrics under your breath and pondering what it all means.

Rating system:
None = Avoid at all cost. Worth cutting your ears off to avoid if someone threatens to play it for you. When faced with even the threat of its cellophane-wrapped presence, your best option is to RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

$= If you stumble across it for cheap in a used bin, it might, maybe, perhaps could be worth the buy, but only if you need a cheap coaster for your cold drinks or a cool-looking frisbee.

$$= You might want to give this CD/artist a try, but only if the sample track tickles your fancy. Don't bother buying this one new because the good tunes you'd get out of this one ain't worth that kind of money.

$$$ = Worth looking for on a casual basis and maybe even buying new, but no big rush.

$$$$ = Definitely worth having in the ol' CD collection and definitely worth buying new, but don't re-arrange your personal "must have" list to get your hands on it.

$$$$$ = Why haven't you bought this CD yet? Go. This is a "Want. Take. Have." situation because you so want this.

Monkey Gone to Heaven is one of my favorite songs (my list of favorite songs is incredibly long and ever changing. But Monkey Gone to Heaven is totally on it)

I know I can't be the first person to point this out, and I apologize for the repetition, but I can't stop myself: the icon you used on this post says "Elistest Bastard," which I'm pretty sure is not what you wanted it to say.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

No one has ever noticed that!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHA!

I actually got it from someone else. I liked the image and didn't pay too much attention to the text.

That? Is just awesome.

Glad I could amuse, especially after the week you've had. I have to work tomorrow, too (and probably Sunday), so I sympathize.

Now that I know you didn't do the image yourself, I feel free to mock a bit.

I wouldn't have developed such a eye for typos if I hadn't worked in electronic pre-press for years. As the last person really looking at a file before it went to press, you'd be surprised at how many typos I caught. Not just in the middle of a page of text, but on covers and cut quotes and other prominent places. Hell, I once managed to catch a typo that prevented a bunch of displays being printed for the "Kennedy School of Goverment." And if Harvard makes this kind of mistake, anybody else can, right?

But in this icon? I might be wrong, but it looks like the type in the icon was created pixel-by-pixel, not typed onto the image. To go through the trouble of drawing the letters and still make a spelling error takes some effort, methinks.
