Oglala Sioux Tribe of Pine Ridge (SD) Raising Funds to Build a Planned Parenthood Clinic
Gakked from everyone on my FList it seems.
This reminds me of a late-nite debate I had in college with Greg, the wild-eyed radical buddy o' mine to whom I once pledged to send lawyers, guns, and money when he finally snapped and started building baracades in Harlem:
Greg: "What do you think would happen if all the Native American Nations decided to take advantage of their sovereign nation status and recognized Taiwan?"
Me: "Heads would explode."
Okay, so maybe a few tribes decided to use it build casinos, but keep hope alive, says I.
To that end, let's give it up for The President of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Cecilia Fire Thunder.
Ms. Fire Thunder, a former nurse, is hopping mad about about the abortion ban in South Dakota and has decided to do something about it by taking full advantage of the fact that state law can't touch her reservation's sovereignity.
She plans to found a Planned Parenthood clinic right in the middle of the reservation.
When I first read this, I was hesitant to post it because I'm not familiar with the Web site where this news broke and I haven't seen anything supporting it, except for a few progressive and liberal blods.

Speaking of taking advantage of their sovreign nation status, when my husband and his work colleagues first found out about this clinic idea, the idea was tossed around of other banned medical services being offered on the reservation. Could an Indian tribe grow marijuana and sell it, for example? Could they offer cheap drugs bought in Canada? Could they even -- going way out on a limb, here -- offer euthanasia? I have no idea what the legal ramifications are on these ideas.
