Dear U.K. Cousins...

Just saw the SciFi Channel's presentation of the new Doctor Who.

You lucky, lucky bastards.

As someone who remembers WGBH — Boston when they ran the Jon Pertwee-Tom Baker-Peter Davison-Colin Baker run of episodes, I'm...I'm...

Speechless.

I can't say you've been holding out on me, since you've all been doing the ranting and raving thing but...damn...waiting until October for Battlestar Galactica just got hella less painful.

What's this I see here? Christopher Eccleston bails after this season?

Please tell me that David Tennant can even match him, because...my God...I think is this the first time I ever considered that Doctor as somone who just might be dangerous.

I can't believe I just shed an emo tear of a Doctor Who episode. I can't freakin' believe the last 10 minutes of 'The End of the World' got to me.

I'm such a sap.

I'm as sappy maple syrup.

I'm a sad, sad little girl.

Isn't it great? I mean, I saw it during the summer when a friend gave me a downloaded copy, and watched it through again a couple of months ago. And still I watched it tonight, loved it all over again, and even more for getting to see it on a big tv screen instead of a little computer screen. And wait...somewhere I think the same friend put a copy of the Christmas Invasion which introduces the new new Doctor, and I've been too sick to watch it yet: but I swear I'll get to it in the next week or so.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's positively amazing!

I can't believe this is the same Doctor Who I saw on PBS *mumble-mumble-mumble* years ago.

Glad you had a good trip, btw. Sorry you're sick. :-( Is it the "travel cold"? (I hate those.)

[identity profile] hilleviw.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is "travel cold", except that because I've got such crap lungs I get to go straight to the bonus azithromycin + prednisone - no passing go, and definitely no $200. Eh. I had a pft of 200 or less for 3 days so I wasn't about to fight the prednisone this time. I'm all about being able to breath.

there's also the little scene (5 minutes maybe?) that takes place on the TARDIS between the end of "Parting of the Ways" and "The Christmas Invasion". I had expected to see it at the beginning of TCI but it wasn't there. If you haven't seen it or don't have it, definitely be on the lookout for it.

That came from the short bit they did for Children in Need, a telethon in the UK to help raise money for ... well, children in need.

Children in Need special, that was it! Thanks, I'd forgotten what they were calling it.

[identity profile] invisionary.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
I saw this series last year via the wonder of BitTorrent. You've still got lots of really good episodes coming, believe me. And Eccleston was great in the role - I wish he'd decided to stick around longer. I still don't know yet how Tennant will be as a replacement.

Also, can I ask where you got your Frank&Tim icon? I'm just getting into HLOTS on DVD and I'd like to find a few icons....

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
If you go over to [livejournal.com profile] eromitlab, the LJ group for HLOTS, you should find a bunch there. Just beware the spoiler posts if you haven't seen it.

The Frank&Tim icon I think came from [livejournal.com profile] delectableoomph or [livejournal.com profile] smashsc, depending on which one you saw. I just got bumped up to 112 icons, so I was busy loading everything I had.

I've got 30 icon slots left to fill.

All my quote icons are also HLOTS.

[identity profile] invisionary.livejournal.com 2006-03-19 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks; I'll check out that comm. Really loving the show so far (I'm up to season 4 now).

[identity profile] aceliwen.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not being from the UK, but being an evil evil television pirate...well, I think David Tennant is hot. Yummy. I try not to admit to lusting after the Doctor, but I do.

Anyway. Yes, Eccleston bails, which is a tragedy. I love his crazy manic attitude. "Antiplastic! ANTIPLASTIC!" However, I think Tennant does a good job. Not quite manic, but awfully cheerful. Plus "New teeth. That's weird."

I'm done gibbering for a bit.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
I know. *wails*

But damn Eccleston is good in the role. Definitely a harder edge to the doc than I'm used to.

[identity profile] glam-ang.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
After watching the Christmas Invasion, I felt that Tennant was darker still than Ecclestone. I was very impressed indeed. (Also, he's now known in our house as The Pretty Doctor, which is never a bad thing.)

[identity profile] aceliwen.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe there's a Tennant icon floating around with the caption, "My doctor goes from zero to bitch in less than six seconds." Which is so true. Although, if my hair kept getting that silly quiff to it, I would also be a leetle touchy.

[identity profile] aceliwen.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a stupid ape of some sort, I have not seen any other seasons aside from the new ones. Although I plan on fixing that through the power of Netflix. But this does mean I'm used to the mopey/grumpy doctor, so I'm afraid I won't like the old seasons...

[identity profile] taerowyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's not nice to say these things to a girl who only gets basic cable. *sigh* Must be patient and what for DVDs. Must be patient and wait for DVDs *looks at calendar* Must be patient and wait for DVDs.

Though on a BSG not...you might want one of these. I know mine is on order...

[identity profile] taerowyn.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ummm...that's "BSG note" (damn my habit of rereading after I hit submit and it stalls on loading)

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
The good news is, SciFi said the series will be released early July on DVD. Let's hear it for Netflix! I'm so putting it in cue, even though I'm watching on SciFi.

On the BSG front, I'm thinking of getting the button that says, "Don't Blame Me, I voted for Laura."

[identity profile] glam-ang.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
If you're desperate, I believe that amazon.ca is selling the DVD at a decent price....

I'm so on the Doctor Who love train!

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe I'm on the Doctor Who love train. I thought it had been keeeled ded.

Nothing spoilery to see here, just move along now.

[identity profile] rileysaplank.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
David Tennant definately does not disappoint. From the one episode he's been in it's clear he'll be a completely different type of Doctor from Eccleston, but they always seemed to do that in the original series as well.

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
*fingers crossed*

We'll probably have to wait a year or something before we see it. I suppose I'll have to keep my eyes peeled to you guys.

[identity profile] midnightsjane.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think David Tennant will be wonderful. I saw the Christmas Special which introduces him, and he has some of the darkness Eccleson had, without quite the manic style. I loved Eccleson's Doctor, and indeed the whole season. Was totally not what I expected, given my limited Doctor Who knowledge. This series rocks.
I think the second season starts up in April, and will be on CBC, for us lucky Canucks.
Must get some Dr. Who icons.

[identity profile] draconin.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
We got the whole series here in Australia last year and it's out on DVD in the shops now (inside a little mini tardis) - I can't believe we actually got something before the US!! ;-P You guys are in for a real treat.

Christopher Eccleston ROCKS as the new Dr and Billie Piper is by far the best companion ever. I simply love her sassy character. She was interviewed on Parkinson and went over very well. I was devastated to see that Eccleston only lasted one season and I hope the new guy is as good.

[identity profile] julia-here.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Loved it all- and get the whole Rpse/Doctor excitement, because previously I was thinking back to the other Doctors, and they were nice men but not prone to make a blip on my shipping radar.

Julia, and not really awake now, so why do I comment?

[identity profile] iyalode.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
Christopher Eccleston was a standout Dr Who. And lets face it, the show needed something special if it wanted to make an impact and connection with a new audience. Old die hards like myself would have watched regardless, but Eccleston gave the character an underlying menace that turned into something truly wonderful.

I babble because I love.

Writing's Brilliant

[identity profile] keith5by5.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
But Eccleston sucks. Too smug.

But Tennant, the Christmas special was superb. He reminded me of Tom Baker (my favourite) in eccentricity.

And who in the hell knew Billie Piper had talent?

I did.

Bella and the Boys as well as The Canterbury Tales.

I am smug because I was telling everyone beforehand she was going to be good.

Liz, I have all the episodes, if you are interested. I could upload them to YSI or Megaupload or something for you. Heck, I could even burn 'em on a DVD or two and send 'em to you in the mail, if that would work better. Now that you've drunk the Kool-Aid and you're on the Nine train, I feel almost obligated to get the series to you ASAP so you don't have to wait weeks and weeks to enjoy the season. Drop me a line and let me know if I can help.

[identity profile] koos73.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's a funny show. Amusement. I like Eccleston though.

[identity profile] omegar.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I think the major difference is that they have returned to the early days of the doctor. He is back to the mysterious Alien guy. In the mid seasons(Doctor 5,6,7 espically, but later 4 as well) we got far to familliar with the Doctor.

Of course havig CE as the doctor was amazing, he is a Fantastic Actor, as is Tennant; so hopefully all will continue to be well.

I was expecting to be bored with the new series, instead i was hooked, rushing home every Saturday to try and watch. I just have to glance up to see my pretty Tardis with Season "1" (its my pet peave they inisist on calling it season one, not season 28, but hatt makes a certain amount of sense)+

[identity profile] booster17.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
David Tennant more than makes up for Eccleston - just as mad, bad and the feeling you get when he turns up that the situation is way worse than you thought. But Eccleston is amazing.

And there's a pretty strong arguement/reasoning that with the second season starting in Britain 15th April, that you'll get that one as well before BSG comes back.

[identity profile] skarman.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Glad to see you all enjoying the new Doctor :-)

I remember seeing a few episodes as a child with Tom Baker and loving it. Then finding out it had been cancelled. I've always been a sci-fi nut so I went back to Star Trek, BSG and the other shows. Heck, we even got Blake's Seven and Space 1999 on public tv here.

Then, last year, I was browsing through the weekly tv mag here and lo and behold!!!!!

Doctor Who returns to the BBC!!!!!!

I was gobsmacked as the Brits would say. So, Saturday night, 8 PM, I change the channel to BBC 1 and just like that, the creepiest soundtrack ever screams through the speakers and I'm transferred back in time, like I'm on the TARDIS......

I'm sitting there, waiting for CE's Doctor to come by and when that door opens and he's THERE!!!!!

After that intro, I've never missed an episode on BBC 1. Not only that, I managed to get the official BBC DVDs as soon as they came out and shared them with like-minded people at the office.

You in the USA are in for a treat. Yes, Chris is manic, he's nutty, he's very dark at times and you've not seen the Fear-O-Meter obliterate it's housing in one of the upcoming episodes that will have you hiding behind a pillow....... Which of course will be topped by the search for a child's mother.... *VBEG*

If there's one show you NEED to see, it's Doctor Who.

Enjoy!!!!

[identity profile] hilleviw.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...and since we all know the people with the ratings boxes were watching some "reality" show somewhere, we must all be good little proles and send notes to the SciFi channel thanking them for airing the show and longing for more, much more, soon.

[identity profile] yma2.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, you havn't seen ANYTHING yet! :grins at memory of Empty Child and Dr Dances...)
Dr Who is one of the best Sci Fi programs i've seen in ages. It may sound strange to say, but it's very, very true. I'm so glad the BBC made it.

[identity profile] tylerdurden76.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm still stunned that Skiffy is showing good shows now.

Though I still will never fully forgive them for cancelling Farscape. They should totally bring that show back and let the Stargates rest in peace.

And I'm still trying to get over the German occupation of France... I mean the Cylon occupation of New Craprica.

[identity profile] texanfan.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it wonderful! I too have seen the pirated copies. In penance I'm buying the DVDs now they are going to be available.

On warning. IMHO the next episode is rather weak. Don't think the show has gone downhill so fast and stop watching, as many have said before me, the best is yet to come. Father's Day, Doctor Dances, Parting of the Ways. There's amazing stuff coming up. I'm an old time Who fan (Jon Pertwee was my favorite) but Eccleston has completely stolen my heart.

[identity profile] liptonrm.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, I know! I always kinda wondered about the new Who because I too remember the old PBS versions and they never made me feel any great love. But Eccleston is amazing and the show is just so fun and yet it still has the serious character notes and I'm so glad that Skiffy has brought it to us poor Yanks.

It won't carry us completely through to October but it'll certainly make the next few months wonderfully enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2006-03-18 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, on board with the Who love. I'm 18, so I was too little to realize what I was missing when the old Drs. were airing (even though I've watched every season of SG-1, thanks Dad), so last night was my first real glimpse at the series. Wow. I sat down with my 12 year old brother and laughed my butt off. We watched both episodes twice (aired back to back in the US on SciFi). We are both starting completely fresh with the characters and it was like......I don't know, WOW. I loved it, and I don't understand anything! What is he, who is he? WHAT WAR? Gahhh....so many weeks to go, yet no answers. And the hot Dr. leaves? The new one better be just as hot, or else lol.

Lots of love,
Melissa (who should just give in and make an account)

It gets better. And yes, Eccleston's doctor is dangerous. (And hot.)

[identity profile] packmentality.livejournal.com 2006-03-18 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Even after an entire season of falling in love with Chris Eccleston, David Tennant instantly became my favorite Doctor. Less manic, more giddy and geeky, still dark and scary. You'll love him, trust me.

I'm so glad we're getting Doctor Who in America now! I've been squeeing about it since I saw one episode on my trip to Scotland.
