Pimpity-Pimp-Pimp

I'm in a bit of a mood today. It's rainy. It's icky.

So, naturally, my thoughts turn to fics that are truly off the beat and path.

[livejournal.com profile] zgirl714 wrote a truly amazing and truly unique story called The Einherjar. It's so delicately balanced between despair and hope that it'll make your heart hurt and tears come to your eyes at the end. She rates it an R, although I have no idea why since it strikes me as more of a PG. Wesley and Xander meet up in Vallhalla. It's about loss and redemption and recapturing the self when all seems to be lost. This is all about Raganorak of the soul, baby! Go, read, give big love.

[livejournal.com profile] aadler_ is one of those writers that makes me jealous as all hell. He's still got one of the most unique takes and styles among all the Buffy-verse writers of my acquaintance. He's an awesome mystery writer who knows how to sucker-punch you with a twist right before the end. Even though you know it's coming, you always find yourself laying on your back and blinking up at the ceiling when he lands the blow. He pulls off yet another awesome one in Beg to Differ. It's about a Watcher and the vampire who shares his soul seeking vengeance and justice. With right crosses and double-crosses, you can't be sure that what you see is what you get. To give away more would completely ruin the story. You must go read. Now. Then leave slavering feedback.

Oh, and two music downloads from YSI, just because I can't possibly be the only person who needs a pick-me-up.

Postal Workers Cancelling Stamps at the University of Ghana Post Office has got whistling, rhythm, and a chair-dancing beat.

Good Rats — Dropkick Murphys because, damn I need something punkish to get the blood pumping today.

I think with [livejournal.com profile] zgirl714's story she did intend it be very much more slashy than it ended up which is why it started out with an R rating.

That sort of explains it, then.

I think this is one case where definitely the lack of slash made it a stronger story for all that. It made Wesley's confusion over what Xander was trying to do that much more realistic.

Great recommendations.

Loved the bit where Xander 'conversationally' begins showing Wesley how it works in Valhalla...

I read [livejournal.com profile] aadler_'s story and for the first three chapters I was thinking "this is the most exciting new talent to emerge in the Buffyverse since [livejournal.com profile] frimfram" - but by the end I was feeling bitterly disappointed, even cheated.

I already posted a big thank-you in my reply to your commentary at the end of the story, but this is here, directly for you. Thanks enormously. I’ve received approval and recommendations before, but never anything as fulsomely complimentary as this. I’m just waiting for the end of “Water Hold Me Down” so I can read, evaluate, and offer observations of my own.
