This 'n that...
Turns LJ/Verizon issues may actually come down to a bad ethernet card. For some bizarre reason, Windoze has decided that I don't actually have one. I've tried running recover. I've tried forcing recognition. I've tried adding new hardware. No dice.
I've got one thing left to try before cracking open the case. I probably shouldn't bitch because the thing is four years old and is in near constant use. *sigh* But it works rather well, my good ol' HP.
Anyway, a quick happy B-day to
charliesmum! May your day be shiny and bright!
(On a side note, can anyone in LJ land tell me how I can get reminded for people's birthdays on my FList? Thanks.)
Also, gakked from
maystone. Richard Biggs, who played Dr. Stephen Franklin on Babylon 5 has passed away. According to the message from JMS reposted on
maystone's journal, he either died of a stroke or aneurysm. He was only in his 40s.
And finally, I gakked this from
peridot1974 and I have to tell you, when I did it I fell off my chair laughing.
As Giles is wont to say: "How very appropriate."

Wish I could help with the rest of it.

When is your birthday?
I did the battle cry thing. This is mine:

If your operating system isn't recognizing the card at all, it could be something as ridiculous as the connectors getting dust on them or the card simply being jarred loose -- don't get a new one until you just pull it out, slap it back in (maybe in a different slot) and check it out again. As for card choice, I have personally gone the d-link route myself, but I had a Netgear for years that never gave me any problems.
HP = Merry Goodness
Of course, they just gave me (well technically the school I teach at) a (well, I get one, and we got four others) brand new tablet PC, multimedia projector, assorted accessories and so on for free.
So I might be a tad biased at this point.
But I do have a four (I think) year old Pavilion that is still going great, so I've had good experience with them too. Never had a problem with it that I didn't cause myself.
