BtVS S4 for under $20

Ahhhhh, 'tis a buyer's market for BtVS sets.

I bought the first three seasons at a discounted rate waaaaay back in the day when they were first released. Let's hear it for a cross between an employee discount and sneakiness with MySimon.com. Never paid over $30 for BtVS S2 or BtVS S3. S1 was gotten new for the cost of a used set now ($19).

I said I'd buy S4 and S5 if I could get them for under $20 each, under $24 each with shipping.

Only way I'd take S6 and S7 is if I got them for $5, including shipping.

Heh.

Yesterday:

BtVS S4 for $19.50, $22 with shipping.

I rock.

People are really dumping their BtVS sets for like, totally cheap to pay for that "Chosen" collection. Buyers market right now.

*waits like a vulture on S5*

wherewhere?!

I got it off the Amazon Marketplace. (Here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AQS18/102-2319650-1878560?v=glance&n=130)

Sadly, S5 has not dipped below $24.95 year.

I was tipped off on the TwOP boards to watch Amazon Marketplace and Half.com. It seems a lot of people are dumping their BtVS sets to pay for the "Chosen" special edition. By and large, people who've gotten it are either really pleased with it, or are really pissed because they think the set is a bit of a rip off (especially if you owned all the seasons already).

Needless to say, some people are stuck with both their full set of old releases and the "Chosen Collection" because, as one person complained, "It's a buyers market right now."

DVD re-releases always depress me.

I collect anime, and I've more or less given up on purchasing any series anymore, since all I have to do is wait a couple more months and *bam* boxset for 1/2 (or LESS) of the per-disc price.

I'm unsurprised that a newBuffy DVD release has people dumping the old one. They count on that.

What really has me mystified is that, aside from a single new disc of extras and more compact packaging, there is nothing different content-wise in the "Chosen Collection" that you didn't already have in the regular season-based DVDs. Even the artwork on the discs, the interactive menus, and the extras such as they were are exactly the same.

In short, I think people who bought the "Chosen Collection" expecting something for their buck got seriously ripped off. This is a clear-cut case of going to the almost dry well to squeeze some money out of people.

Frankly, I think if you already owned the entire searies, the "Chosen Collection" looks like a collosal waste of money. Since I don't personally care if the sets I own are new (and because I have zero plans of ever buying S6 or S7), I got S1 through S3 new, but I also got them at a hefty discount. While I'd like to own S4 and S5, I'm not in a rush and can wait for the pricess to hit the floor. I have zero plans to ever buy S6 or S7.

Looking at the shelf those Angel/Buffy box sets take up, I have to ask - how much more compact are we talking here?

[identity profile] liz-marcs.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Significantly less, but that's because the sets are "stacked" instead of "side-by-side" and the disc packaging has been streamlined down to booklet size (held together, according to reports, by scotch tape).

From TwOP, here's links to pictures. You might have to scroll through the thread to find the examples I saw: http://btvsfigs.proboards48.com/index.cgi?board=TV&action=display&thread=1124474542&page=4

I'll keep my box sets. I like seeing them lined up, side by side, in all their boxy goodness. Plus, all of them were gifts. It was a sad day for hubby when there were no more to buy for me.

I'm impressed with your ability to resist the sets as they came out, and wait to get a good price. I'm just too much of a completist (completest?) at heart for that, I guess. Once I've decided I'm going to collect something, I need to get each release right when it comes out, or else I break out in hives. Or, at least I presume I would break out in hives, because I've never managed to wait long enough to find out.

Of course, even though I bought S6 and S7 as soon as they came out, I have never once watched any of the discs. I don't think I watched any of my Angel discs after the S2 set, either. But I could watch them if for some reason I wanted to, which means something to me, I guess.

Yes, I know I'm not right in the head. Thanks for asking.
