I think it's a case of getting through this next part because it is hard (emotionally, not technically) for me write. It's something of a deliberate ape of some of the hard decisions Giles has had to make.

It's one of those things: Xander agreed to be a Watcher, but he hasn't had to make any really hard decisions that go against his instincts for the greater good.

All through the canon, sure, he's had to make compromises by working with people he didn't like, but he's never been the one to make the decision nor did he ever have to do anything that he knew would keep him up nights. He's always been able to rationalize his decisions as "being for the best" in one form or another. This particular situation he won't be able to rationalize it beacuse it's a spur of the moment judgement call where he'll never be 100% sure he did the right thing.

It doesn't help that I've been heading for this situation for awhile, so I can't really back out of it now, even though I suspect I'm about to really piss some people off.

So, yeah, that's the source of the Xander-pokage. I'm not getting the usual fight with the character (or what I deem to be in-character in canon) that I'd usually get with something I know is going to have some people screaming bloody murder (like the case of Xander and Anya getting it on). It's sort of the whole "rip the bandaid off and get it over with" writing.

Heh. For some reason, I'm reminded of the wisdom of one Homer J. Simpson, who said, "Ah, beer. The answer to, and cause of, most of life's problems."

You say this like arguing with imaginary people you do own would be somehow more sane.

Plus, how can someone "own" an imaginary person? The legal right to put out stories about that imaginary person? Sure, someone can own that. But there's no way that I'm going to let anyone tell me that they own my imaginary Buffy and that I can't have her do what I want.

See, it owned (in the copyright sense) the imaginary people, in theory, I could make money off them at least. Can't make money off Xander, hence, a step further into insan-o territory.

I think my concern would be that you seem to be "loosing" the argument with imaginary people you don't own.

Except, of course, in this case that is good because we get neat stuff to read.

It's a fairly big compulsion to sit down at the keyboard and write it out.

The big thing I'm concerned about is that all of Xander's motivations are clear because, and I think this just might be the case, some people are going to be pissed when they read it.

As long as he's safely in your head and not splooging all over fanficrants, I'd say your Xander is pretty well-behaved, relatively speaking. ;-)

In all seriousness, I did have an off-line email with the individual involved in that and she did apologize.

She realized that she may have been overstepping the bounds when she confused me with someone else, namely, someone else she'd been having problems with. When I pointed out that I didn't even know who she was, so I couldn't exactly be one of the people she was having problems with, she was pretty horrified.

Those rants were taken down.

So I give her a ton of credit for back off and walking way instead of digging herself in deeper.

On the other hand, I do feel kind of bad. She was completely reasonable about backing off, so maybe she really did feel like she was being picked on the case she was ranting about. Since I wasn't even involved, I can't say one way or the other.

Yeah, props to her for knowing when to quit. I'd say the sploogey part was just taking what was basically a personal issue with another fan, not diectly related to fanfic, to that particular comm.

At least it's Xander, and not Lindsey, for instance...:>

Heh. But Xander is probably a lot more of a pest than Linds. Linds is definitely the more adult of the two of them. Linds would just guilt me into it. Xander pokes you with his finger.
