I just want to weep for poor Alex. He's so confused and no one can explain, and no matter what happens, Alex dies. Even if Xander doesn't.

I'm guessing that Xander wanted to face the end as himself but now time doesn't allow for that. They better not leave Alex alone. In his current state he's likely to do a runner.
