Rom's early appearances definitely show that they hadn't quite nailed down who the character was supposed to be yet. I remember at one point Quark made mention of his having *no* mechanical aptitude, which is completely contradictory to his later status as the engineering idiot savant.

And you're absolutely right about Nog. I adore him and Vir both for that very reason.
