Dude, the original series is it's own kind of trippy drug.
I feel you on the lack of television, too.
Since I started watching TV on DVD (thank you Netflix!), I have very little patience watching commercial television. This is the reason why I haven't been watching Supernatural (which, again, I think is a fun show, but not anything terribly deep). I've got a friend who has the DVDs and I've been watching S1 thanks to him, but I'm so far behind that there's no point in me watching the episodes of the new season live.
I actually don't own a lot of series, at least compared to a lot of people I hang with, but I do have about a dozen (give or take). Both versions of Galactica happen to be in that number.
I think a big part of Galactica right now is because there's a huge wait time between the seasons, which I think contributed somewhat to some of the dissatisfaction with S3. The problem is that Moore is filming it for a DVD audience, which means that to get the impact of the S3 closer (for example), you had to have re-watched the entire series from the mini through the end of S3 without interruption.
It's nicely constructed when viewed like that, but there are some huge drawbacks. There were episodes where people were complaining that certain things came out of the blue and I'm all, "No, no! This was brought up in the mini/S1/early S2."
Honestly, as far as the new incarnation of Battlestar is concerned, DVD is almost the only way to watch it.
