Xander was always an underutilized character. I think some of the writers just didn't know what to do with him other than comic relief. Ironic that by the end of the series I'd lost most of my interest in the main character.

I think NB and JM both put something extra into their performances. For JM it got him added as a regular, which was good and bad since Spike was so unevenly handled in the writing. NB never got the recognition he deserved. At least in my opinion.
