Yeah, I realized that fic and original writing in general just wasn't my thing pretty early. If you want me to analyze a story from seventy-two different points of view, ok. If you want a plot, forgetaboutit. My chemistry teacher was the person that taught me all about the evils of plagiarism in a school environment and the penalty (automatic failure for the course for a serious offense). Like I said, English teachers didn't really pick up the ball until 12th grade.
As to HP fandom in general, I remember a TON of newbies registering at FA, most (including myself) using a fake birthday and admitting it to each other on the boards. And we just LOVED CC; she was wonderful, and smart, and cool, and popular, and everything else we had always wanted to be. When I first read mscribe's story, I knew that if she had been my age, I couldn't have blamed her. At 12, it might have been something I or someone I knew would have thought up. It's the fact that it was a grown woman looking for that acceptance that made it so weird. And CC copying others work would have been the same, if she was very young. In middle school, we were just told don't do it, but there was never any incentive to follow the rule. When I was 10, I was playing one of those free rpg games. On the boards I had an avvy, from a copyrighted website, and claimed that I had made it. The admins slammed me so hard I wanted to cry, lol. I never tried to pull that on the internet again. If someone had called her on it early, she may have stopped, but I think CC has gotten to the point that it's too late to just apologize. So she's going to make a stand.
