Personally, I don't think Giles's influence can be underestimated there. Even though Giles did have a habit of snapping at Xander more than Buffy or Willow, he did provide a positive role model for an adult, which I suspect influenced Xander a great deal.

I think a lot of the positive role modeling was the snapping. It let Xander know when he'd gone too far in an appropriate way. I mean, Giles set boundaries and enforced them appropriately and maturely.

I need to think about Xander's relationships outside the Scoobies and see how much of Giles is there. Unfortunately, we don't get to see much of Xander interacting outside the Scoobies as an adult.
