It's taken me three flippin' days to hit 800 words.

Go you! I agree, who knew 100 words could be so bloody difficult. And I swear to god sometimes I've deleted a word and the 'count' doesn't change.

Don't rely on automated word count - it's only there to give an approximate indication of document size for people who have to submit a thesis or article of a given size.

What I do is count the words in each paragraph followed by a running total, which makes it easy to keep track of changes. For example


First paragraph which says very little. 6 6

Second paragraph which adds a little more and demonstrates the running total in action. The first figure is the paragraph length, the second the total document length. 27 33

Third paragraph for the hell of it. 7 40

and so on.

w00t! Congrats you! But if you start conquoring drabbles, does that mean I have to learn how to write multi-level, multi-pov, multichapter, psychologically challenging yet sound fic?
